I've installed windows 2003 and its networked with windows xp through router.
In the beginning the networking worked perfectly.
That is, I could drag files from windows xp computer and put it into my windows 2003 one.

But!@!!@@!@@! now it does not work.

Everytime I drag a file from the windows xp computer, the windows xp computer freezes completely!!! My windows 2003 computer says there is some networking
problem! How the hell did it work before then..??????!

What in the hell is wrong!

There always seems to be a problem each time i install windows and its FRUSTRATING!!!!

Please help!

Hello iversonis and welcome to MSFN... :)

Sounds to me like the IP has changed on the XP or 2003 computer to something other than what it was when you set up your network. In Explore on the XP computer go to My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network> then right click>and the click on explore. What should happen is that the IP will be found during the scan of the network.

I hope this helps...

Make sure your speed and duplexing match your router. In a workgroup setting you must create the same useraccounts on each PC with the same passwords to properly share files. Make sure you haven't recently changed either of the passwords.

Before jumping into the router, why don't we verify some details, such as is this xp home or pro? What is the exact error you are getting? Are you using tcp/ip or another protocol? Are you using any firewalls/have you disabled the xp firewall? Where are you dragging the files?

The first step of troubleshooting any networking issues is to do a clean boot with msconfig, and try safe mode w/ networking. Do that first and post the results.

My intuition tells me it sounds like a firewall or 3rd party software issue. Doing safe mode w/ networking would confirm this.

Post any errors in event log.

You might also be having a browse master conflict. By default, server 2003 will try to become the browse master. What i would recommend is turning off everything, then turn on the router, server 2003, xp, in that order.

This could also be a redirector issue. Uninstall any hotfixes related to the workstation service.

And as far as using the same username and password on both computers. First, you would have to have simple file sharing disabled, since simple file sharing uses the guest account to authenticate. Second, with simple file sharing disabled, it would be a good idea to use the same username and password on both computers, but you don't have to. On my 2 computers i use different usernames. XP Pro will allow you to save the network password, so you only have to enter it once. XP Home won't let you do this, so for xp home you would want the same username and password.

Thanks! You are right, I started from scratch and its fixed.. as of now..
