I believe I accidentally removed mspaint when I created my minimized XP installation.

I usually run it by typing "mspaint" at the RUN prompt but this is not working. I do not see it on the start menu either.

I tried using an XP CD which was not minimized with nLite to install additional Windows components but mspaint does not seem to appear when I click on Accessories > Details.

Do I need to create a new nLite installation and reformat to install mspaint?

No luck. The drive labels did change. I searched the hard drive for "mspaint" and was unable to find it. Tried using Windows CD to install additional components and also check control panel -> add/remove programs -> windows components too with no luck.

i'm curious why use such an archaic program like that when there are 3rd party apps like paint.net (which is vastly superior to ms paint in every way possible)

The idea of nlite is to reduce size....

This said, there are tens of small sized freeware apps comparable to MS paint, which are installable allright and that don't need huge runtimes.

1. I press the keys start, r, m, s, p, a, i, n, t, enter without thinking from years of habit.
2. MSPaint loads very quick and I can quickly accomplish certain tasks with it.

Similar to the reasons I use calc and notepad quite often. When I'm on the phone in front of a computer, it doesn't matter if it's a 386 which has just been reformatted, typing "notepad" at the run prompt will give me a text editor in mere seconds. For more serious jobs I use Word and Aptana Studio. Same goes for calc vs. Excel, Matlab, etc.

Honestly, I don't want MSPaint to do anything more. I usually just use it to crop a screenshot- maybe write a word and draw a line on it. I can be done uploading the image before CS3 would be done opening. I could find another 3rd party app which loads quickly but I haven't found a reason to. Besides, I'd still end up using computers which don't have Paint installed and when I'm accustomed to using Paint I don't have to think "crap, now how am I going to do this?"

Actually, I might need to install a 3rd party app. I'm not sure that it's worth creating a new nLite CD and reinstalling Windows just to get paint back. If I name the executable "mspaint.exe" I can at least load it the same way .

davidd31415 i'm very impressed if you still use a 386 machine
i get what you are saying though. if you are used to something, it requires less thought, and is more comfortable. you might want to look into something like FuturixImager. i've no experience with it but it seems pretty basic if you just want to crop stuff.

jaclaz i'm pretty sure that 200mb of space is b/c of .net. the paint program itself is only a few mb in size. for people who install .net a few more mb for a really good paint program isnt too much of a problem.

that was just one example i gave. there are a few others out there like GIMP, Artweaver etc
i dont see anything wrong with giving people other suggestions. maybe they are unaware of what else is out there.

MS Paint is not on the list could be due to your C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysoc.inf has no entry to MS Paint because your XP is nlited (with MS Paint removed when u slipstreamed it)

How about going to your original source (search for sysoc.in_, then expand the file to compare the entries again your copy in C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysoc.inf)
Maybe u can manually add the entries. Then try running Adding Optional Components to Add/Remove Programs. (or in run box, type : sysocmgr.exe /y /i:C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysoc.inf). When prompt for CD, insert your original XP source, not nlited source.

That's all I can think of. I'm running out of ideas w/o reinstalling or re-do another nlited disc. Sorry.

Sure, but you were curious about the reason why, and I did just as you did before, posted "other suggestions" , maybe you were unaware of the general idea behind using nlite, though the fact that it isn't named nbloat might have given a hint.

Next time someone asks for a notepad replacement, everyone is welcome to suggest Microsoft Office or Openoffice.org suites, but I doubt that such a suggestoin would be gladly accepted.

A self-contained, portable little app can usually be renamed, you could rename it as mspaint.exe and be done with it, cannot say if the above applies to any of the above programs, but you can always make a mspaint.cmd file invoking another app, possibly using cmdow or a similar utility to hide the DOS windows.

For the record, I have LOTS of issues about nlite using the .net framework, but nlite (and the requirement for .net framework) is for the install on which you run nlite, not for the nlited output.

You will have to concede that it would be rather pointless to use nlite to remove (coincidentally ) 200 Mb from an install size, only to re-add them in the form of the .net framework+paint.net ONLY to replace MSPAINT.EXE and it's functionalities.

Of course if you need .net anyway for other apps, that would be allright , but still to crop a screenshot from time to time a graphical app like paint.net or TheGimp are a bit overkill.

no jaclaz. i think the only person having issues is YOU. stop being an a**. i am fully aware of nlite and what it can do. but guess what? people use it for different things. its what you call multifaceted. i offered a helpful suggestion, if he didnt like it, fine. no skin off my nose. but you seem to be the one that is talking down to me which i dont appreciate at all and is uncalled for. and all for what? for the fact that i tried to be helpful and offer a different suggestion?

oh and fyi if you read carefully he wanted to avoid starting over. hence, therefore, he already has his os installed. so your comment about removing 200mb of stuff only to re-add it with nlite or whatever is pointless. he wanted to avoid starting over.

secondly you have no idea if he had .net installed or not. for all anyone knew he already could have

thirdly when i made the suggestion nobody knew what he used mspaint for. you didnt. i didnt. sure you can use that 'overkill' as an argument NOW, but fact is it only came to light what he used mspaint for later on, and not when i made the suggestion.
