Hey everyone, I've updated the software list with almost every suggestion, removed dead links, added many new applications. The old topic remains linked to at the bottom of the above post, as well as an attached Excel file I am using to manage the above post. I intend to add descriptions to each line soon.

Of course suggestions on software and categorization are welcome! :)

I would like to add in Graphics (other): trueSpace7.6

Microsoft bought it back in 2008 an it's for free now, comes with manual in PDF and some nice videos. lots of textures and objects to download and most are for free too.

Have fun with this one ;).

That Pretty Much Covers Up Everything!
It's Hard To Find A Free Tool That You DiDn't Mention.....

How 'Bout Daemon Tools Lite- Pretty Good App (Are There Any Reasons You Left It Out? Security Perhaps?)
No, I Don't Have A Solution, But I Certainly Admire The Problem.

At least for me, Virtual CloneDrive is much better:
- smaller install
- no adware in the installer
- doesn't require a restart to function
- up to 8 virtual drives
One downside is that it doesn't support .NRG and other proprietary formats.

Another freeware virtual drive manager that I like is MagicDisc. It has the same advantages as the one above, plus the interface is like Daemon Tools. It supports .NRG and others.

I don't think we should include Linux only software, including Live CDs, like GeeXboX because by its nature almost all of the software in that domain is free and would detract the meaning of this list IMO. Similar I am leaving out Daemon Tools because it is adware and similar non adware software is available.

Otherwise I've added all of the suggestions so far and the following:

thegreenbow.com vpn client doesn't look free, and the kiwi and memtest links are crossed over.
In "Disc mounting" you could add Imdisk http://www.ltr-data....ode.html#ImDisk
Thanks for the list.

I'm not so sure about that. I was very pleased to use disks like http://www.sysresccd.org/ to change partition size.
Or to use the http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ for several hardware checking and all that jazz..

I admit I used gparted not too long ago and was really impressed by how well it works these days.

Problem is a Live CD category is easy to add, but technically we could add almost any number of applications that would run on them; furthermore many installer discs are 'live' now too. I foresee it spawning a new topic, which would probably belong in the other subforum. And the topics would need names to avoid confusion: 'Free Software for Windows List', and 'Free Software for Linux List'.

On a different note what I would really like to see is Guides made by members that show how/why they use certain software, what it can do, and why they like it; this might be a sticky topic or a new subforum.

What do you guys and gals think? :)

Also missing in the list: Video Editors (and I mean tools like Vegas Pro and Adobe Premiere), NLEs.

You could try the usual VirtualDub and avidemux suggestions, or something less usually suggested like VideoPad.

bitser isn't a video tool. Seems like a zip file-manager of some sort, but I don't see its advantages over others, like TotalCommander.

A Deleted Partition Finder & Revoverer ... (I needed yesterday ;)

Partition Find and Mount (by A-FF Data Recovery & Atola Technology - UKRAINE)

DD: Sep 2010 - 1,6 MB - Englisch - Installer (.exe) - Freewareversion for private Use
OS: Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows 2000

HP: http://atola.com oder auch http://hddguru.com
PP: http://findandmount.com
DL: http://findandmount.com/download

SS: http://findandmount.com/scrs/i2.png

INFO: http://www.it-admini.../software/40657
BERICHT: http://www.pcwelt.de...eft_festplatten

HOWTO: http://findandmount.com/howtouse
TOUR: http://findandmount.com/tour

BLOG: http://blog.atola.com

Partition Find & Mount implements a new concept of deleted or lost partition recovery.
It works in the most convenient way possible — by locating and mounting partitions into the system,
thus making those lost partitions available to you like any generic disk volume. Partition Find & Mount
will also work in case any Boot Record (including the Master Boot Record) is missing, damaged or overwritten.

A Universal Windows Bootrecord & Bootmenu Creator (HDD, USB-HDD, USB-ZIP, MBR, PBR, Grub4DOS, PLop etc.)...

BOOTICE (by iPauly - CHINA : http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu)

DD: Apr 2011 - 162 KB :thumbup - Englisch - Standalone Portable - Freeware
OS: All Windows 32-bit

PP: http://www.boot-land.net/forums
DL: http://www.boot-land.net/forums
DL: http://www.pendrivea...dit-boot-sector (Mirror)

SS: http://i.imagehost.o...BOOTICE-PBR.gif
SS: http://www.pendrivea...m...BOOTICE.png

EFB: http://www.essential...pic.php?t=15330

Backup/restore MBR (Master Boot Record) + PBR (Partition Boot Record) Change your MBR/PBR to another type

For example, with this utility, you can install Grub4DOS to your MBR or PBR, install NTLDR or BOOTMGR
to your PBR, install SYSLINUX to PBR, install the MS-DOS boot record to your PBR, and so on.

And, BOOTICE allows you to rename the boot file, e.g., you can rename Grub4DOS's boot file
from "grldr" to "ggldr", NTLDR boot record's boot file, from "NTLDR" to "SMLDR" or sth. else you like.

It also has the ability to re-partition and format your flash disk drive. You can even seperate your flash disk
to 2 partitions(only 1 is accessible in Windows, the other one is hidden for private data or boot images).
And another useful function is to backup or restore your MBR/PBR of your disk.
