The European Union warns that the internet is running out of space.

The EU says governments and industry must work together to create more space on the internet immediately. EU Commissioner Erkki Liikanen says getting the new system up and running before addresses run out in three or four years is vital.

The new communications system, known as Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6), will increase the number of internet addresses. It will make room for the expected explosion in mobile and internet-enabled devices to come.

However, experts say moving to the new system could cost billions of dollars worldwide to replace equipment and software and update existing applications.[/quote:e2bf5b6fed][/color:e2bf5b6fed]

its true, we are currently at about one third internet capasity, ip addresses are made up of 4 blocks of numbers, eg: 127.0.0.1
each with a maximum 3 digits in each block. with more and more devices being permanently connected and more and more people online these numbers are getting in short supply (kinda.. )

the internet was never envisaged to be so huge as it is already!

yup yup...

we got something like 4.3 billion possible numbers...

Some ideas where to use a time share mechanism, like how isps have say 200 slots in this one area and randomly give out the ips..

well what if we could split those ips with non-users from isps etc...

but ya.. it should be interesting to view how we shall solve this problem...

as FthrJack mentioned, nobody envisioned the internet to be so big..
who would imagine that every consumer would actually have a computer...(heck they have more than one...)
