best fire wall

ZA around the 6.0.667 era was pretty good, though I'd recommend stripping out all possible plugins (anti spyware, mail safe, etc.). A hefty 30+ second startup, but no meaningful impact on performance and fantastic control of per-program access control. Stay away from any version that has ''Game Mode'' as they're too new and bloated.

For Windows 98SE I have been using Zone Alarm v4.5.594 .... I think newer versions after this one were starting to slow things down. It's a good working but simple fast firewall ... no unwanted "extras" ... and it's easy to configure. I use the Pro version but the free version is really OK.

... Zone Alarm link ..... http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/info...aseHistory.html ... it is still working as I post this.

As for an anti-virus ... I use ClamWin ... I don't like an anti-virus program running all the time using up resources. In fact, I don't have any anti-virus program on my computers at present, if you are careful, it should work ... but I have ClamWin ready to go and also an anti-virus rescue ISO CD ... I like the Kaspersky Rescue Disk ... seems to be up dated more often but in a pinch, they should all be of some help.

File Hippo - ClamWin download or other anti-virus software ... ClamWin still works with Win 98SE.

I would recomend trying Kerio 2.1.5.

Get it from MDGx's site and read all the associated notes upon setting the rules which he also provides links to. It is also worth reading the threads regarding Kerio 2.1.5 on the Wilders Security Forums which contains much information on rule setting by various users. Try google for even more rules, there is a wealth on information on these if you are prepared to look for it. You can even import a ruleset from various sources as a starting point but look upon these as a starting point only.

No firewall works straight from the box as everyones needs are different and Kerio has to be worked on but I found it by far the best.

No noticeable effect here on performance on either my 98SE(Pentium 111 1Ghz) and my 98SE2ME(Pentium 111 1.4Ghz) boxes.

Cannot comment on Antivirus as I dont run any.

Kerio 2.1.5 is one of the best firewalls for 9X systems. I'm running it on 98FE, 98SE, and 2K. Even on my 366MHZ Celeron powered unit, there's no slowdown. Software firewalls don't get much lighter than Kerio.

Regarding AVs, most have already dropped 98/ME support or will be shortly. There are no AVs that won't affect the performance of 98/ME. I don't run an AV either so I can't comment on whether any one is better than another. There's better ways to secure an OS.

The 'Buy Now' link is blocked by an entry in MDGx's excellent hosts file...

Hmm, weird, regsoft.net is also used by ghisler.com (Total Commander): http://www.ghisler.com/online2.htm

But it seems that there have been indeed some issues with regsoft:

http://successfulsoftware.net/2008/03/09/r...stomers-beware/

Thanks for pointing this out - I was not aware of the problems!

OTOH, apparently the parent company (Digital River) is doing well:

Digital River extends contract with Adobe Systems, launches e-commerce platform

Cry me a Digital River

The company's continued success in the consumer electronics segment is evidenced by winning new opportunities or launching stores for including Samsung, Seagate, Phillips and Hewlett-Packard among others.

Maybe it is time to remove regsoft.net from HOSTS file ...

ZA v6.1.744.001 is the last one that supported 98SE. I am running it on an other pc with no issues. The only thing that needs to be done is REM out a line that ZA adds to autoexec.bat (you can even delete it).

Personally, I find that it does not slow the system down at all apart from at shut down. Adds about 5-6 secs. System boots to desktop with full internet in 57secs. Try it out but before download the how to remove instructions.

I also tried Kerio 2.15 the last free version (which works on 98SE). Small footprint, light on resources but from my extensive readings the raw version needs more detailed rules than the very lax default ones. At least that is what I understood.

There are many posts about from people who have created rules and which you can just plug in eg as per below.

Good Luck

Herbalist,

You mentioned in a post a few weeks ago about securing an OS via 'whitelisting' and not 'blacklisting' using an anti-virus/anti-malware-etc. that quickly become outdated. You said that you would post some information about doing that if there was any interest.

I'd be interested in learning about that.
