Me says Hello to you all! :hello:

Looking forward to a new "SP2" vLite version, and trusting nuhi to give me a few days to update the swedish lang. file!

I also would like to explore a "7Lite" Edition whenever that day will come!

It's NOT sad we have no open source vLite\nLite...

...Think of this - you get the "Latest and Greatest" vLite and after vLiting your system you install it, then all of a sudden your system goes online and starts routing porn, viruses and spam emails...

Please, dont give fake hope.

nuhi doesn't have time, he said so (a long time...).

is not going to open the source code, he said that too (a long time too...). :hello:

either way, don't scare people or tell, how many opensource proyects are that dangerous?

XPize is full of viruses, spyware, tojans, etc because now the source is open?

OMG

C'mon! Rationale behind Kel's post (with explanation), is because if any other "bad" person got hold of the source, they might modify it (as was explained) and distribute it under the pretense that the original author wrote it, and BAM! Instant virii/trojans and who would be blamed?

Bear in mind, that we have no "controlled" environment (except for our own self-control) like SourceForge has (read the GNU/GPL stuff). Someone writes, we test (on separate machine or VM), report back, suggest changes, and volunteer to directly participate (with author's consent and direct co-operative off-line sharing and not willy-nilly). Many of these projects are written in languages that others are not familiar with and may very well be complex.

Again, in many cases (these included) it would be downright dangerous to "open source" it. No GNU/GPL provided, period!

It is now (for these projects) simply a waiting game, so we wait...

You don't need source to release a virus/spyware loaded version of nLite/vLite. And there is already loads of virus loaded OS ISOs created with nLite/vLite, releasing it's source wouldn't make any difference, no one would bother with it as there are simpler and more effective ways to distribute malware.

I really dread a future without Vlite and Nlite. Using "lightened" XP and Vista is a daily part of my professional and personal life. I can not imagine using Vista SP2 or Windows 7 without making it lighter using vlite first. :(

Too many good projects died when the author lost interest, threatened by some big company or just daily life intervened. I hope Vlite/Nlite follow a different way.

Best wishes to Nuhi... Levent

We DO NOT need dozens of hacked up dangerous versions out there.

They are to powerfull and way to customized to let the general public\hackers have access to it.

NOT AGREE!

We not really need open source, but we need a timely update!

I think only open source can solve the problem,

but this is just dreaming, as nuhi does not open it and i can't coding it...

Something like this needs to be in a VERY controlled enviroment.

Too many people could easily make nefarious versions and sucker the common user without their know.

Leave a port open here....

Dial a open address...

Poof PC and data plus connection GONE.

It's already being done with one of the most infamous WAREZed copies of XP and Vista out there. I am barred from mentioning the name here (By common sense and forum rules)

This copy I mentioned actually sends the maker data and not only that he gets paid for the use of your pc... Ads, toolbars and soforth.

fully agree with Kel,

remember guys, nuhi worked solidly on nlite then vlite basically without a break

now he has a real job.

if everyone donated, then maybe he could just sit at home, churning out new versions without needing to work :P

ms seem to be edging towards more component removal, which could negate the need for a 'xlite' program

Agreed - considering the add/remove components has morphed into a way to really remove/disable Windows components in Win7, and the fact that it has a command-line interface for it, it might be unnecessary. I know there'll be those who want to trim the size of the install down, but using it to "lighten" the install itself isn't all that necessary with Win7 anymore, you can do it with Win7 directly.

One thing is manually uninstalling a part of win-xxx.

Totally another thing is doing that before installation is done.

It means

1. Smaller iso

2. faster installation

3. fore sure v/nlite allows more configurations/components removing that ms will ever do

4. You don't have to apply every change everytime you install windows. It saves you a lot of time

5. Drivers / software automatic installation

6. etc, etc.

Why shouldn't Vlite be needed anymore win win7???

Fully agree with all of these points. Especially #3. There will be several things that MS simply won't allow removal of unless you've got an 'x'-lite.

Agreed, hence why I said:

I know there'll be those who want to trim the size of the install down...

But, again, <x>Lite wasn't designed initially to reduce the size of Windows - it was to remove components and make a way to slipstream things into the original install media. The fact that nuhi's tools were able to trim down the install size of Windows was a side-effect, but not the goal. It will be up to nuhi to decide whether he wants to open it up, continue with it himself, or let it die. All choices are his to make.

This can happen with ANY program. An open source version of vLite would be no different. No matter what it is, when you install a program, you're opening up your system. If someone wanted to, they could make a "nefarious version" right now. Just create an installer that installs the current version of nLite, along with some malicious goodies

Heck, an open source version would be even safer than a closed source one. Having the code means you know exactly what is going on with the program. You could add things, remove things, or just compile it as is
