@Xeno86
In addition to the problem I encountered with Yahoo Messenger 9, I would also like to report that I still have problems using Flash 10. I followed the instructions given here on how to install it and it does get installed without any hitches. However when I start browsing the net (I use Fire Fox 3), it will crash, and an error message will appear, saying that Fire Fox had an error involving "dumping" or something like that. I'm very sorry, I wasn't able to write it down.

Would it help if I install another patch to help address this problem? Right now, my rig only has KernelEX RC4, Root Certificate update, Shell98, and the latest unofficial security patch.

Hope you can help me. Thanks!

I use Traditional Chinese Windows 98SE

After I installed Kex RC2, I can install FireFox 3 without any problem. I can use it to browse.

I tried to install Flash10 after putting in the Regedit
Current Version/NT thing and it installed OK.

Tried to browse Flash movie after that. It works OK with FireFox 1.5.

Then I go to my ME machine and
tried to install Kex RC2 on my Traditional Chinese ME

During the install, I got this error:

ERROR: exportfromX: pattern not found
setup return 2

At the time it was extracting setupkex.

Is there any manual way to install Kex to get pass this error?

Thanks

Two questions:
1. Could the new KEx architecture be conceivably used to stub-out missing imports from non-system dlls? For example, could I choose for a gtkmm dll placed in an application's binary folder to stub-fake a non-critical void-return function?
2. How often does KEx update now? When should we expect RC 3?

Yesterday I have briefly installed Maxthon 2.5.1.4751 in an attempt to test some web-related issues. Long story short, it uses as many Unicode function versions as possible, but inspite that, they all seem to load fine here except for mfc42u.dll - that one throws a messagebox stating it can only be run on Windows NT and not on Windows 95 or 3.1 (!!!) and also on a Dependency Walker profiling it requires mfc42loc.dll (localized version of mfc42.dll, I suppose). Note that I did not have KernelEx installed at the time (just didn't occur to me :blushing: ).

1. Has anyone tested the 2.x line of Maxthon with KernelEx and got it working?
2. If not working, what's the ETA of implementing mfc42u.dll's function set in KernelEx, if any?
(this may well be in line with SlugFiller's question above)

how to remove old version of KernelEx manually?

I've removed the RP7 without removing the old kernelex off my system, I have problem installing RP9 now since the old kernelex is running on my system.

again, how to remove the kernelex manually (the uninstall option was lost after removing the RP7)

I found some problems with KernelEx. Some text editors, for example, akelpad (and there are others) have troubles when entering non-english letters (russian, for example). These problems disappear after disabling KernelEx for the editor. And there are problems with copying to clipboard in some applications. I think there were not such troubles in KernelEx 3. Luckily I can disable KernelEx for such apps.

Just a warning if you don't already know ,if you try to install Office XP with Exkernel RC2 and probably RC1 as well you could receive an internal error message. In the event that this happens just go to the setup file on the disk and disable Exkernel and the error should not occur anymore. If you get the same error again upon the installation after the restart uninstall Exkernel and try to install it again.

Another issue. Akelpad when started with KernelEx enabled does not load its plugins on startup. With KernelEx disabled all is OK.

And one question. May be its time to add some ntdll.dll functions? I'm lacking NtQuerySystemInformation for VistaStartMenu, though I have written patch for it with a function stub, that does nothing. And I know a man who lacks NtShutdownSystem, which can be implemented with SHExitWindowsEx from Shell32.dll.

Hi,

My system is Win98SE lite (sleek option, win95 explorer).
I have two questions:
1. Do I need to set the compatibility mode for WindowsXP for each program that I want to run,
which is not supposed to run on win98?
2. More specifically, how to run foobar2000 with KernelEX?

Thanks in advance for help

At first you should understand that KernelEx is not a panacea and not every XP app will work. Unfortunately, it seems that current version of Foobar doesn't work with KernelEx. You may try older versions.

You don't need to set the compatibility mode for every program. Firstly try to run it without the compatibility mode.
Some programs should just work without any further actions.
Some programs may crash, or complain about missing DLL, or that they are connected with missing component, or something like that. Unfortunately such programs most likely will not work with or without the compatibility mode. Though you still may try to set the compatibility mode to Windows XP SP2, but the chances are low.
And some programs will say that you should use newer OS or that they will not work on 98 or something like that. Compatibility mode was designed to fool such programs, so use it in such cases. And in some cases you also should apply the registry trick (for example for Flash 10 plugin installation).

For installation needs temporary replacing of [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion] VersionNumber key to "5.10.2600" to install - DON'T FORGET to change it back!!!

And if the program was working without KernelEx and has issues with KernelEx you may use the Compatibility tab to disable KernelEx for such program. It helps in almost all cases.

Don't know if KernalEx can be made to address LightScribe incompatibility with Win98, but that would be cool.

The required "Lightscribe System Software" (http://www.lightscri...dex.aspx?id=810) will not install with KernalEx 4.0 RC2.

I will note that there are several CD label making programs that run on 98 and support LightScribe (Acoustica is one), but don't support it for 98. From what I have been reading on the web, LightScribe simply cannot be made to run on 98.

There's an unsolved and annoying problem left.Posted Image
Printing pages (PdfCreator0.98) from K-Meleon browser very often results DrWatson report:

Win32 WINSPOOL core component used an uninitialized function pointer.

Module Name: WINSPOOL.DRV

All printers in my system folder disappear and 98SE has to be rebooted.
But it doesn't happen all the time. I didn't manage to find why after reboot printing the same goes well. No such bug if KEX4 is downgraded to KEX3.6 or uninstalled. I suspect it's KEX4/RP9.1 conflict residue. I've checked this case on two my 98SE computers with RP9.1 (all effects on) based on K7S5A and K7S41GX
regards,

I thought I'd mention here this Legacy Extender commercial package I have just come across. It seems they have been reading this forum and topic but they don't mention it explicitely.

This legacyextender makes it possible to use VS 2005/2008 on native Win9x applications without breaking compatability. Only useful for developers. The purpose of KernelEx is to make non-native user applications run on win98. That's very different. They might have been reading this pages, I have no idea, but should they have mentioned that?

Hello RetroOS,

OS:Windows Millenium
KernelEx-4.0-RC2

Adobe Reader 7.0.9

You say to use "Orca" :
- Using Orca, make the following changes to Adobe Reader 7.0.9.msi:
- Drop row UnSupportedOS (Version9x) from both InstallExecuteSequence and InstallUISequence

but it does not work under Windows Me.

I do not need to install Adobe Reader 7.0.9

Thank you in advance for a solution.
Best regards

Emulators and Utilities:
ONGD - FREE - Demul 0.5.3 WIP

Compatible with KernelEx 4.0 RC 2, although there is no popup window while creating Vms or selecting the path for image file.
