Those Sysinternals utilities no longer work on Win9x oc_dt, there's nothing wrong with your kernel. You either need to use older versions of those utilities or use http://www.steelbytes.com/?mid=47 to patch the utilities to work on Win9x.

Bravo, thank you for point this out. The sysinternals forum also suggested the following:

Delete the registry key HKCU\Software\Sysinternals\Process Explorer

I will try to see if it works too.

I found that many people are running KernelEx Final happily; whilst some users including myself are experiencing similar problem with Final but not RC2. Are we having some fine bits in common? Really looking forward to update from Xeno86. Cheers.

That registry removal does not work. The last version of procexp that works for Win9x is 11.11, I found the following link:

http://www.filehippo..._explorer/3854/

Do you have information on checksum to verify the validity of this file?

Of course the registry removal doesn't work, but the utility 'exeversion' (from steelbytes) mentioned above does in fact work with the latest version 11.33 of ProcessExplorer - it runs without problems in Win98!
(unfortunately this trick does not work for ProcessMonitor)

Just wild guessing, could this be related to active desktop? I'm using active desktop in my case, after installing Final even the desktop icons cannot be shown and also explorer failing. For other users encountering problem with Final, are you using active desktop?

The problem you have is caused by your version of Norton CleanSweep not being compatible with KernelEx.
Technical explanation:
CleanSweep uses api hijacking technique to redirect api calls to APITRAP.DLL therefore KernelEx can't recognize the original api caller. There are two possible solutions - you can either uninstall Norton CleanSweep or KernelEx extensions can be disabled for that module but then every program which is hooked by CleanSweep will also have extensions disabled.
I suggest that you uninstall Norton CleanSweep because it also slows down whole system and might cause issues with other software.

Cheers! That completely explains the situation, I have successfully installed Final; moreover, Flash 10 is now running happily with Firefox 2!

My hearty thanks and respect for your prompt diagnosis!

What settings do you have in compatibility tab for JRE installer?

None. If I set it to Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP2, I get the following error:

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running Windows in safe
mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

Hi RetrOS,
did you get your installer problem fixed ?
Just for information:
I installed Java 6 update 15 (and 14) flawlessly (no 1723 error on both - setting compatibility tab to WIN 98SE and disabling next generation plugin after installl) on WIN 98SE with Kernel Ex final + SESP4 beta + RP 9). I changed frm Java 5 update 20, because this panorama-applet did not work in Java 5 update 20: http://www.maltacamp...0-panorama.html
Does anyone know why this is ?
By the way newest Spamihilator version (best (??) free spamfilter for outlook express) also installed and works without any problem : http://www.spamihilator.com/

Thank you again Xeno (and Tihiy)

Hi RetrOS,

...

No, I've had the same problem installing Java 6 update 15.
I can get it to install using the same workaround I used for Java 6 update 14.

...Blender 2.48a is working with KernelEx - for all those 3D rendering and animation buffs out there! :thumbup
Blender requires Python 2.5.x which is 9x compatible anyway.
It also requires the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable.
When the redist install is run, it will fail, but it has already copied the following files into %windir%\SYSTEM32.

msvcm90.dll
msvcp90.dll
msvcr90.dll

Simply copy these three files into %windir%\SYSTEM.

I've now got the current Blender 2.49a with avifix working with KernelEx 4.0 Final.
Blender 2.49a (and higher) now requires Python 2.6.x which is not supposed to work in Windows 9x.
However, both Blender and Python installed with no drama and Blender is working beautifully!

Just a heads up, Mozilla Firefox 3.6 alpha 1 [codenamed namaroka], does not work with KEx4.0final. It fails to start 'mozcrt19.dll' when loading despite the dependancies having been satisfied.

Hi! I would like to inform that KernelEx 4.0 Final 2 is available for download. Unfortunately I can't make a release because Polish IP addresses have been banned from msfn.org - thank you xper! See thread titled "IMPORTANT: MUST READ" for reference. Unless I am unbanned this might well be my last post on this forum.

Xeno86, you're not banned from MSFN. But all Poland IP's are, for the time being. This is a necessary and unavoidable mesure, at the moment. None of this is directed at you, don't take it personally. Please do not go away, you're a most valued member of our community. I'm sure Tihiy can host KernelEX from Russia, which would solve the present problem in an acceptable way.

KernelEx 4.0 Final 2 testing

All works okay so far.
Windows actually starts up faster to the desktop and general Windows operation is faster.
I expect this is partly as a result of the KernelEx DLL delayed loading.

I played YoFrankie using the Blender Game Engine for a while and went through my normal apps.

New app working:

Scribus - Open Source Desktop Publishing
http://www.scribus.net

Scribus 1.3.3.13 (stable)

1.3.3.13 (stable) and higher requires the Flash 10 trick to install: http://www.msfn.org/...936-page-1.html

Prior to KernelEx 4.0 Final 2, Scribus would fail to finish loading with an error.
Currently, there is an invalid page fault in MSCTF.DLL (Microsoft Text Services) during Scribus startup (non-fatal).
And also when it closes, it has a number of application errors (at least four for me):
- invalid page fault in QT-MT3.DLL
- invalid page fault in <unknown> (sometimes QT-MT3.DLL)
- invalid page fault in <unknown> (sometimes QT-MT3.DLL)
- invalid page fault in <unknown>

I have not done any real testing in Scribus since I've only just got it to actually load to the GUI...

Requires GhostScript 8.6x or newer (http://sourceforge.n...ts/ghostscript/) and GDI+.

According to the Scribus Software Requirements:

Windows 98 and ME are not supported at all as there are many functions in Scribus which depend on features available only on Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Hehe :) - not anymore!

Scribus 1.3.5.1 (devel)

This development version is actually more stable (and much faster) on 9x/KEx than 1.3.3.13 (stable :} *irony*).
GSWIN32C windows pop up briefly during Scribus startup and occasionally when certain tasks are performed.
For example, selecting Help, About Scribus, pops up a GSWIN32C window for a moment.
When closing, it has an invalid page fault in KERNEL32.DLL, sometimes followed with an invalid page fault in MSVCR80.DLL (Visual Studio 2005).

The first time a new install of Scribus is run, it builds a font cache (slow).
In 1.3.3.x, it did this everytime :} (probably a Windows 9x issue)
However, in 1.3.5.1, it only does it the first time and then just checks for any changed fonts thereafter.
Both versions appear usable in Windows 9x with KernelEx 4.0 Final 2

Thanks Xeno86 - This is a really cewl adventure.
Each version is like unwrapping a present - Nice work!
Top marks :)

Possible bug report for KernelEx 4.0 Final 2

After installing it and running Windows under load for ~8 hours, Tiny Personal Firewall started throwing TdiHook errors when trying to view webpages under IE6, and I was unable to open DOS windows (it would throw out of memory errors even though any 32-bit program seemed to work fine, aside from internet using programs making TPF throw TdiHook errors). This has never happened on this machine before, and the program load was normal for this machine. No amount of closing programs resolved the issue and a reboot was required.

Slightly, they are different programs, but Tiny was its name before Sygate bought it. As far as I know, the versions of Sygate used on Win9x are Tiny with a different UI layout and branding but the same firewall core.

It's even better than previous version.

I understand that those damned spammers from my country (unfortunately) are more than annoying but we have in Poland really bad associations as regards collective responsibility (from WW2).
