CharlesF, could you answer, why you're still using IE 6.0 (it's a very bad browser IMHO)?

Lol!
I don't use so often IE 6, my main browser in Windows 98 is Opera

BUT there is a few reasons why I am still keeping Internet Explorer in work:
- I don't use IE 6 itself (which is completely blocked by my FW) but his engine through Maxthon. I love this program, I'm very accustomed to it and he has several functions and plugins that I was not able to find (at least as simple) in Opera
- it is faster to launch, faster to read flash videos
- a few sites are still asking Internet explorer instead of Opera (like bank, for tax return, ...). For them I use a spoofed User Agent making them think it is IE8
- as Fredledingue said in another thread, the main annoying experience was javascript controls that may completely freeze it, but his incredible tweak has solve this problem

Even Microsoft recommend to uninstall it!

For security reasons, which doesn't concern that much the old OSes (especially when you take a few precautions).

Btw, Xeno/Tihiy, lot of thanks for another update of KernelEx! :thumbup

From me too
but I have to wait until this WE to find the time to install and play a bit with it.

Fixed: Qt4 apps not showing interface fonts

Thank you very much! Great job as usual; this fixed one of the problems I was having.

It's a bit off-topic but:

Yes, with Maxton you could customize IE in a way you prefer but still you're using slow and "ancient" Trident engine, which is a real headache for webmasters/webdesigners.
Faster launch time is understandable because of tight intergration with OS.

For security reasons, which doesn't concern that much the old OSes (especially when you take a few precautions).

Indeed, it's a main reason but not the only: IE 6.0 is over nine years old browser (released on August 2001) and which is even more important, not compatible with modern Internet technology.

Well, you didn't ask me, but I'll tell you: I keep it mostly to help support other users that still have it in use. Also for the engine, which removal cripples Win 9x somewhat. And for the odd download, when I need to do it from 9x. I mostly navigate from IE8 on XP SP3. I was a faithful user of Netscape, up to v. 4.78.0.55 (which I still do have installed, although it's mostly useless, at present). Then I moved on to IE 5.0, which I've upgraded gradually up to IE6SP1.

I now (with KernelEx 4.5 RC5) retried to update the plugin Flashblock to 1.5.14.2 and restarted Firefox 3.6.12 manually. This time it apparently installed without problem.

Hey,
It seems there is a minor bug with the new KEX and vlc (1.1.4). Some fonts became way too small.. For example the vol.-numbers and the fonts of the equalizer (nearly not readable).
Bye

I had no luck with installing ANY recent version of Media Player Classic Home Cinema between versions 2371 and 2714.
I get errors like:

"...the MPC-HC.EXE file is
linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL."

and

"the MPC-HC.EXE file is
linked to missing export KERNEL32.DLL:HeapQueryInformation"

So, what ELSE is necessary, along with KernelEx to make it work ???

Download MSVC2008 compiled versions. And IE6 is likely required. Support for MSVC2010 runtime is not planned soon.

Did anyone try Office 2007 format converters? Is it too hard (huh) to install? It will run almost-out-of-the-box soon, but if you're eager to try, i can give everyone painless no-msi-editing method now.

Also plz don't discuss IE in this thread, period.

First test, Office 07 Converter Pack:

It works well (with DOCX only). I just left the old Word Viewer 97/2000 on here, no encrypted/passworded files open, but I will try with the Word Viewer 2003 next.

Second test, trying the Word Viewer 03:

I must be forgetting something in Orca...I have the installation going but it reaches a point (I think writing registry values) and starts to go backwards and eventually reads "installation ended prematurely because of an error".

Partial success, I give up for now.

You need to remove ExecSecureObjects from msi. Don't try too hard since soon you won't need to do that.

Indeed! It installed, but has a few minor issues. I'll put some screenshots to explain:Posted Image

When I click File -- Open and click on Desktop in the dialog box, I see this:
Posted Image

Folders seem to be missing, like the Windows Folder, Program Files(Seems like all it sees is 'My Documents'):
Posted Image

Still no encrypted docx support. Double-clicking files works fine.

Congrats, quite an achievement.

I could install it (delete LaunchCondition with Orca) but it did not work. Error with WORDCONV when opening a DOCX file with Word 2000

I used Orca to delete the launch conditions of O12Conv.msi from FileFormatConverters.exe version 12.0.6015.5000. Started the O12Conv.msi and it installed with one reboot and a scanregw error. I tried a dozen docx files using Word 2002. Perhaps 7 converted perfectly. Three converted but with this error: "There was an error opening file." Two failed to converted with this error in Wordconv: "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." As expected pptx files failed to convert.

Any thoughts on whether the latest version of the converter might yield better results?

Impressive work in any case. Thanx.

I repeated the experiment with the latest version that I could find: 12.0.6500.5000. It works at least as well and probably better.

Now we would like crash logs / those files.

I should have mention this...
When I had just installed the converter and had the Word Viewer 97/2000 installed, I could not open DOCX files within the viewer, Double clicking them was the only way the converter seemed to work. If I chose File -- Open within the viewer, it displayed garbage.

Try finding your printer driver file spoolss.dll, right click on it, go to KernelEx tab, choose "Disable KernelEx extensions", close with OK.
And don't forget to report back.

The problem isn't related to KernelEx, at least not directly:
http://forums13.itrc...5&threadId=2991
http://forums.techgu...g-win-98-a.html
http://web.archive.o...om/?kbid=247821
here, point 3:
http://web.archive.o....htm#ERRSPOOL32

Your best options are trying to replace spoolss.dll with the one from Me (4.90.3000) or disabling the antivirus.

I have installed KernelEx 4.5 RC5.

Running fine,
but I don't find any improvement in VLC. :(

Like previously I can't use any version after VLC 1.0.3.

I have the very latest KernelEx installed, but when I try and download the latest Adobe Shockwave player 11.5.9.615 It trys to install, but then it stops and I get an error on Firefox, here are the details, and wondered if there was something I did wrong or need to do in order to get the shockwave to successfully install, by the way after the error is shows up in the list of add/remove program list, but the player doesn't work because when I test it on the adobe site nothing shows in the box.

SHOCKWAVE_INSTALLER_SLIM caused an exception c0000417H in module SCC.DLL at 016f:008b6300.
