RetroOS
WARNINGThese instructions could potentially render your Windows 98SE unusable. It is highly recommended to have a full backup of your Windows folder before proceeding! Also, make individual file backups for each and every file you delete or overwrite.Store these backup files in folders off the root that you can easily get to from DOS for recovery.I was prevented from starting Windows several times while creating this proceedure.I could roll-back file changes (in DOS) from my BACKUP files I had made. So, I still have a working Windows 98SE!You have been warned! And by the way:*** Do NOT use the Add/Remove entry to uninstall Revolutions Pack 7!!!If you do, you will roll-back Windows to the time of the Revolutions Pack install!!!This will effectively make newer software installs unusable and remove any newer settings. Also, if you have ever installed Revolutions Pack 7 over the top of an existing install, then the C:\WINDOWS\revbckup backup files are useless anyway...But hey! If you want to time travel, then sure, be my guest! Use Add/Remove! Just do it! (Oh wait, those words are trademarked - D'oh)Note: If your Windows 98SE is not installed in C:\WINDOWS, then please substitute references below with your current Windows folder.>> This is NOT for the faint hearted! <<>> Do not attempt this if you are not comfortable doing it! <<*** There are reg files to create along the way to make registry changes easier ***Just copy the given text (in code box) to Notepad and save to a .reg file. Run file. After performing these steps, you should be back to Windows 98SE without Revolutions Pack 7 (but still with Windows Me Explorer and Shell). If you are not in fact at your Windows 98SE desktop, then something did not work.No problem - from DOS, just copy back the backup files you made (you DID make backup files right?)Then simply install Revolutions Pack 9! ...and rock on dude!Steps to manually remove Revolutions Pack 7 from your Windows 98SE install:- Set Windows Display Scheme and Desktop Theme to Windows Standard- Run RPConfig and turn off LameSkin- Remove or move these I am now running Revolutions Pack 9. However, there may be some overlooked file or setting, or some difference with your Windows 98SE system that causes problems, and therefore, I cannot make any guarantee that you will be able to complete these steps. In simple terms, you are solely responsible if your Windows 98SE implodes, taking with it the western spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy! You have been warned to backup each and every file you replace or delete. If you do/did not heed this warning and cannot roll-back any changes you made, then please, do have a wonderful time re-installing Windows! I've done the hard work, so enjoy! trevor89
Now how about an automated programme to do it?This may be a bit long winded for some, in fact it may be easyer to backup registry settings of newly installed programmes and run the uninstaller then run the .reg files to re-regidter new apps.Trev
RetroOS
It is long winded indeed! If someone has the time to create an automated version, either as a batch script or executable, then feel free!As long as the automated version backs up every file as it goes, and has some way at DOS level to undo the changes in case of failure.I had thought of doing it myself, but it took so long to establish the required changes, and I have not got the time at the moment.I suppose it also depends on how many people are still using Revolutions Pack 7, and have had it installed for some time, where a roll-back of Windows from using the RP7 Uninstall would be a major!Or those who more likely have installed RP7 upgrades over a previous install and therefore rendered their RP uninstallable... MDGx
I do approve of this guide. Thanks for your [extremely] hard work!Maybe you can create a single exe to perform all these steps without having people do this manually, because it looks like it's a lot of work just to get rid of RP7.
