Help
IE can removed from the windows feutures in the control panel, however that does not work. Most likely the same reasn with Vista that you need to keep a specific component. Not sure which it is (at work), but I think vLite point it out, that the component will break this.
IE and Windows Firewall are quite big components, non the less I only use 4.6GB (all drivers installed). Was previously checking actual file usage (incorrect with links) with page-/hibernate-file included.

Now everything installed, still only 5.11 GB in use. Some non-blocking issues, no biggies:
Snipping tool needs protect on: windows\system32\Magnification.dll & windows\system32\msdrm.dll (can be re-added manually later post-install)
Gadgets appears in the desktop right click menu, but does not work (I thought I removed it as I also did not with the Vista Sidebar)
Nokia PC suite will not install (does not support the platform it say upon installation)
Windows features can not be disabled (IE amongst others would be nice to remove)
I had some issues with installations resulting in errors related to VC80 (Windows Live Messenger), VC90 (Open Office 3.0)
The last was strangely resolved: I downloaded .NET 3.5 SP1 and ran it (no messages what so ever) and after this it seemed to work. Not sure if this was the solution, but it works now.
And the best part: I do not know weither it is the vLite'd Windows 7, my positive attitude or reality, but Windows 7 feels a lot snappier than Vista.

A) You didnt test it, at all.
You didnt notice that one of the options selected for removal was TPM Base Services, thus meaning I had to grab my bug spray which just wasnt enough (I was bum rushed by 53,000,000 error boxes thanks....C)this will not work with server r2, which means add even more confusion and thus why I already hate 7..
EDIT: Nevermind heres a cookie, didnt finish installing at all, it failed which means my list is still relevant and this thing is a stinker.... or as my sig says grab a plunger shes a risin like a mighty missippi

I'm not a guru of Windows, just an advanced user, so I can only say that I'm working now with that preset without any trouble, after installing all drivers and software and using it many hours every day. However, I posted the x86 preset instead of x64, but I'm posting the Last session.ini of my x64 ISO, so there is no doubt (they both are the same, anyway). Here it is:

I noticed that I removed TPM Base Services, I thought it isn't very important, is it?

Hey, do you know whitch component is causing Windows features failing to be disabled? And shouldnt you had kept Error Reporting due to missinng wer.dll warning during the installation ?

No I did not figure out which component it was. I thlought vLite for Vista, but maybe it was nLite. I googled a lot without success. I have protected wer.dll and werconcpl.dll(?; check my preset) and that is why I could remove Error Reporting. However Error Reporting is what causes Windows features to not write to the errorlog what goes wrong see windows\panther\CBS.log:
2009-05-14 19:01:57, Info CBS Failed to submit the Windows Error Report. [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]
... However I am fine currently with my installation, I will leave that challenge for the next install or for somebody else

does someone where can i found the fileS from help after the installation ?

When I got towards the end of the installation, the installation fails because it says it could not find the file: AEPIC.dll
Anyone know what the cause of this is?

Hi, me again.
I followed the recommendations of "FridgeTooFar" but when the installation gets to the point where you select either a "Home", "Work" or "Public" network, when I click on a network it hangs at that screen. The progress bar just keeps scanning across but does not go any further.
Any ideas?

I tried comparing the install.wim files, but I think easier is to perform a re-install. I would also rather know which files I need to keep as well. I want to remove IE, but if I need to keep 180MB for Help to be able to remove it, then I am not too sure. Would be nice if it were just a few files that need to be protected.

Well it hangs on me too, i deleted windows 7 , i am happy with serv 08 and when its discontinued im sure ReactOS will be ready or a BSD i will go
I went into making this list with the idea (A very naive one at that) that would be simple to do win 7 with vlite, I was wrong and I also didnt think that you needed to keep the whole friggin OS (well almost) to run it, so I am abandoning this Windows Certified Lost Cause™, Houston, Aquarius this is apollo 13 off..... (and vista is much like apollo, and 7 more like friggin challenge or the titanic, well it wouldnt be if nuhi didnt jump ship. oh well)

Ok guys made a new install of the build 7127 64 bit this time i canned media center and all its components this build is extremely good and if u delete the games and DVD maker and all the wallpapers, themes, and sounds then compress the drive. The whole install is a like 4.05 gigs which is amazing here is the preset enjoy let me know your thoughts...

This is directions that were written by birdibird on the asus eee pc forums this script does work be careful if you don't understand something ask before doing. This will save even more space for you.
ok, another trick which saves quite some space (thanks to kazuni):
delete unnecessary files from winsxs
make a batchfile, for example cleanwinsxs.bat with the following:
@echo generating list of safe/unsafe extensions for removal
@c:
@cd \windows\winsxs
@mkdir \safe
@echo generating safe list

ok, another trick which saves quite some space (thanks to kazuni):
delete unnecessary files from winsxs
make a batchfile, for example cleanwinsxs.bat with the following:
@echo generating list of safe/unsafe extensions for removal

I think there is a better tool to clean Winsxs, but I have not yet dared trying it :WinsxsLite (requires you manually download some additional libraries). I think there is some stuff on this in the Windows 7 folder.
On the latest 7127 build I heard some rumours about "debugging-stuff" in package, which causes the OS to be slower? Will check this myself in the Windows 7 forum.

Nokia, Open Office, WLM all require VC80 files. If I restart and try a 2nd time, then they do install.
Also I keep Windows Help so that I can remove IE8 from Windows features. Windows Serahc and Gadgets can not be removed completely. I am going to try again with keeping Windows Search and Windows Sidebar and Gadgets. Also will try to remove Game Explorer, Windows Event Log and MDAC.

I have a question here. And yes i have tried hard to search after this both here and in Google and couldn't find anything out about the problem i have.
Well, i have made an almost perfect vLited version of Windows 7 Ultimate RC1 Build 7100 (64-bit). Atm the ISO file takes 1.73 GB. Yes i have followed the guides in this topic, so i don't remove some things that i'm not supposed to remove, so i don't mess up my Windows 7.
At the moment i'm running my vLited version of Windows 7 in VirtualBox so i can test out the OS before i install it for real.
But there is a small thing that annoy me a bit.
It's the Sticky Notes. I can't get it to work. When i start it it says this: Meta Data for some of the notes has been corrupt. Sticky Notes has restored them to defaults.
And when i press OK after that, then the window with 'Sticky Notes has stopped working' is popping up. And then i have to press OK again because the program couldn't be started so it had to close.
So my question is. Do someone here have a single clue on what kind of thing that make the Sticky Notes to not work?.
I hope someone can answer me this, because it will be a pain in the a** to go through lots of things on vLite to only find that out.
If needed, i can put the Last Session.ini file here to only if you need it.

I actually found out what the problem was. The problem was that i checked Snipping Tool to be removed. So now it's not removed.
So now the Sticky Notes are working like it should. But Snipping Tool in Windows 7 doesn't work though, but that's fine because i don't need that program. It just says it need the MAGNIFICATION.dll file to work.
