after much tinkering, ive decided to keep netfx3! ive got the install size down to 2.61gb without pagefile/hiberfil. it takes too long to sort out which file causes errors so not worth the hassle! :P

ive decided to give it one more try as things look a bit promising but i made a slight mistake of removing the servicing baseline package for ultimate so no programs show in the program & features in control panel...

How about an update to your style of slimming down win7 based on the above? Can't wait to give it a run. [that's based on 32-bit though? hope 64-bit can be tested too]

will post a final batch file once im done but i slim down the old fashion way...by deleting files manually! :P

I also will be making a new thread and posting a guide oh how to use some tools that i have put together to remove packages using dism and cleanup files and folders by using waik tools. Then using vlite to minimize your install based on 3 versions i have put together. More on this later still testing a few things but almost ready to release these tools. Sausage Hack if you want to talk to me sign onto aim and i will look for you :thumbup

That's great to hear guys. Stamp your ID on the thread title! ie. [dead0s Guide to...] Take pride in your work! And it makes it easier to search.

Question: I'm testing out a neat small win7 install, but it has an issue with relocating the user shell folders, say moving my documents to another harddisk. I'm getting a "folder redirection" issue. Any ideas why this is happening and how to solve it? I imagine, and hope, its only a disbled service and not something deleted during the vliting?

===== Post Nº2 =====

Having problems playing World of Goo in my install. Any you guys running it ok? I've installed dx9 files and used the stock wddm driver and the ATI 9.3 to no avail.

Hmmm getting the not genuine watermark once in a while on the desktop. Got to get rid of it by going to Control Panel\System and Security\System to refresh the activation status [still got a good 20 days of evaluation]. Is this an effect of a disabled or deleted service?

finally got the install.wim size down to under 800mb...installing now! :D kept netfx2 but deleted almost all of the netfx3 files! im hoping to get an install which has zero errors in event viewer...?

===== Post Nº2 =====

2.37gb install size without page/hiber file, netfx2 intact & no errors in event viewer :thumbup

theres still a few remnants of netfx3 files in winsxs tho...

===== Post Nº3 =====

heres my latest batch file for ultimate x64:

you should probably keep servicing baseline for ultimate tho? rather than using vlite to remove media center, i used dism & then manually deleted the files from the winsxs including other files so you will need patience & a lot of testing in vmware. also, after you commit the changes post batch file, then apply vlite to remove files, create iso (dont apply tweaks yet) & test. then start deleting files after mounting again...

7600.16385.090713-1255_x86

GImageX and vLite = image 3 (Home Premium)

Removal of IE DISM returns the error, these 2 packages:

Microsoft-Windows-IE - Troubleshooters-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.1.7600.16385
Microsoft-Windows - InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.1.7600.16385

Do not remove the IE ... :no:
Or you manually delete after the copy of ieproxy.dll (liquid0624's cleanup)?
Anyway what you do with the IE?

I recommend leaving internet explorer at this time but the problem is u need the IE version number to remove the optional one not sure about the other for example you have this after the package name (~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.1.7600.16385) when it should be (Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~8.0.7600.16385) that is probably why you are getting errors ;)

Has anyone come up with any kind of a list for the folders its safe to remove from winsxs yet?

I don't know why Microsoft can't just give them names you can understand.

Why do the folders have overly complicated names, for example:

x86_microsoft-windows-grouppolicy-base_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_27f9b80248563b76

Why isn't it just called:

x86_grouppolicy-base_001_6.1.7600.16385_none_001

???

Why all the massive numbers?

31bf3856ad364e35?
27f9b80248563b76?

Why THOSE numbers! Do we have billions upon billions upon billions of files? Nope. So then why does it have 31bf3856ad364e35 part way through and 27f9b80248563b76 at the end?

Are they trying to make these paths extremely long for a reason?

The best I can do is use FolderSizes and just remove say 10 at a time but lets see 10 folders at a time and there are over 4500 folders thats 450 installs I would have to do, not including all the times I would have to go back because one folder of the last 10 is needed.

There has to be an easier way. Don't tell me only MS knows what is in these folders?

EDIT: I just opened the WIM in Muiz Vista Tool and checked with FolderSizes, the biggest folder there now is this:

x86_microsoft-windows-winocr-ocrengines_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_a31b6cff9464aa03

It is 41.6Mb.

But errrr... what the hell is it? Google brings up 3 results, none really say much.

This is what I mean! Its hard dealing even with one folder, and there are more than 4500 left after this.

Some say they got winsxs down to 350Mb! I wish I knew how, mine is still at 1.20Gb now and I have removed:

Printer Drivers (easy, the PRN* folders)
Modem Drivers (mdm* folders)
Intel Driver
ATI Driver
nVidia Driver

After that I am lost!

Agent Ransack is good, just untick Expert User and untick "Sub-Folders" (no need to search the sub-folders thank god) and just search the mounted WIM for "inf" it has over 400 folders there, duplicated drivers... now why would you ever need that?

Heres just 10 of them:

x86_1394.inf.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_629143d483332d09
x86_1394.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_fb05acc2673b8783
x86_61883.inf.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_35d382370ee9281a
x86_61883.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_29d3b94380a88738
x86_acpi.inf.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_b38934ed2a389a3f
<200 folders later lol>
x86_kscaptur.inf.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_dc0b9adfc678a29b
x86_kscaptur.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_c157f782f82af9a9
x86_ksfilter.inf.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_7a8288442620f032
x86_ksfilter.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_ec9264b5476999c8
x86_lsi_fc.inf.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_375e53bad45db200

WHAT A COMPLETE MESS. :realmad:

EDIT: I can confirm removing all the folders with dot inf ".inf" in the name, Windows still installs, at least in VMware Workstation it does. My real system of course has radically different devices/hardware.

no mass!

You simply don't understand Fusion and SxS:

http://blogs.msdn.co.../05/405449.aspx
http://blogs.msdn.co.../14/576314.aspx
http://www.grimes.de...sWSThirteen.htm

Starting with Vista MS puts all the DLLs versioned into the WinSxS folder and links them to the direction folders. Deleting files only REMOVED HARDLINKS, no files and does not free up space!

How come about 80Mb was taken off the ISO then? :whistle:

Then another 100Mb or so from removing more folders still? :whistle:

Some might be hard links showing size to them where there is none, but others are certainly files.

files inside the WinSxS\Backup folder are not hardlinks, so this is the cause why your ISO might be smaller.

But removing hardlinks doesn't free up space.

No I cleared out the Backup folder ages ago, these are the winsxs folders themselves.

@LeveL

the Backup folder is the place of the WRP (Windows Resource Protection). This is what you know from XP called WFP (Windows File Protection).

So you mean its like "dllcache" was in XP?

Always gets me that you could just put a corrupt/edited/nasty version of a file in the dllcache and it would restore that copy to system32, or is that true, I can't remember. It came up with blue text as well that folder, very special!
