In my situation, the floppy drive still plays an important part: College work. My college still uses floppy drives to save work to if I have to finish something off at home. No point in using CD-RW, cos they don't have them, not even a CD-ROM Drive (blummin cheap bastids)
I also use a floppy drive for my norton ghost 2002 boot disk (If there's an option to make a bootable ghost 2002 cd, then I'm interested - tell me how)
I also use it to run FDISK (although that would be rare, only need it for a real emergency)
Also, have you seen the vote results on ZDNet? most people want to keep the floppy drive. I don't blame them.

I use my local college and they also don't have cd or cdrw but what I do is upload my documents etc to the net. I have a couple of free sites which host files for me (actually anyone can join) Then from home I can access my uploaded files.
Most colleges these days have always-on net access and even the humblest home systems have net access too.
Still, the floppy ain't dead yet.

Cant remember the last time I used my floppy drive, pretty much burn everything to disc and not finalize the burn if I still have room. Currently running a Iomega zip drive as well and dont even use that much

Until they make a cdrom drive/ZIP that is fail safe and detected by dos without the needs of drivers...My trusty floppy drive saves my a** on a regular basis! The floppy drive will be around for some time to come..i think it will be more stubern then the isa slot! they were talking about geting rid of that thing about 3 yrs ago.....MoBos still got them!

to save porn pics, so I can take them to work and look at them on the PC without internet access.
I also use them to store cracks, patches etc...
I also use them to boot PC's with CDROM's ZIp CDRW etc...
I agree they are heading the way of the punch disk.

I think you can't replace foppy drive until there is BIOS support for alternative. floppy disks are pretty much useless these days execpt for one - DOS bootdisk
Even more, I think there is no need to replace them.
1. You don't need 100 Mb Zip or alternative drive to be able to boot from it, when you can get floopy drive for $10.
2. There is no need for alternative storage device when allmost all of us have CD-RW
...IMHO

Some of the new compaq Desktops PC's coming out at the moment are legacey free which means
no
Floppy Drive
serial port
paralell port
PS2
All common used OS comands are built into the diag partition on the HDD, which is setup through a bootable CD.
Only inputs are USB 2, DVI, and firewire...

But then again they dont really have Scsi digital camera, or mini dv camas, hidef scanners and what not. So Firewire and USB2 serve a good purpose in my book..... :spaced
