hey all, i've been offline for a while trying to sort out some unfinished business but im hoping in the next week or so to upload a new and final guide before SP1 is released. there won't be any further updates til then. i have found another way to clean most of the winsxs folder without breaking instead of using aviv00's method which i will also post, so updates should install fine and no need to do another run of KB947821 after install.

Great dead, this very cool your work!
A new guide including cleaning the winsxs is perfect!

I need to install windows on a small SSD which means that I need to do some kind of slimming down. That's why I decided to follow this guide. I don't however have Windows Ultimate, but I decided to try anyway.

I have now followed the guide down to the last letter. I was unable to find the MS update that relates to nod32 but it didn't seem important? vLite gave me a few errors at the end of it's run, but it had something to do with temp folders on the local machine so I figured it was unimportant.

Anyway, I'm just about to test install it but I thought I should mention this interesting thing first. This process has not slimmed down my iso at all. In fact, the new iso after all the removing is actually 40mb larger than the original iso I started with. I'll let you know how it goes.

Nope. Install didn't work. Setup complained about a missing CD/DVD driver. Funny, because I was installing from a USB stick.

So where did I go wrong?

@Fr33m4n: There is something way more wrong with your iso than that. You need to start again and delete the lines from 'addx64.bat' that correspond to the two unnecessary updates.

Thank you very much for your guide. According to your existing guide.pdf, can I integrate all the Windows hotfixes released since RTM in Step 9, not just the ones mentioned in the prerequisite section?

Besides that, I hope that your future guide includes steps to integrate drivers. Previously when I vlited Windows Vista, I used DriverMax to backup the installed drivers before integrating it to Windows image via vLite. Hopefully, your future guide will enable us to remove the default drivers contained in Windows 7 and integrate the ones created by DriverMax for example. Very much looking forward to it. :thumbup

see 1st post for the updated guide which includes all updates since rtm, not the actual files tho as you will have to download them from ms :P driver integration is possible using dism but not sure how. i would recommend to create a new folder with your drivers & save it into the install.wim, it would be much easier?

Thank you for your prompt reply and your freshly uploaded guide! :thumbup Well done!
I accept your suggestion. Could you show me how to create a new folder for driver integration? Presumably, it should be done during Step 16, before making the ISO, right?

it wont be driver integration as such but when you have the image mounted, create a new folder in the image (eg in the root) and insert the drivers into it. then after installation, use the new folder for driver selection.

@dead0: Thanks for the new guide. I'm having trouble finding all the updates though, is there much difference in this guide's update requirements and the previous one? If so is there anyway you could upload the new updates that weren't needed for the previous guide?

i may do a refresh of the batch files before sp1...target install size is now 1.5gb for x86 & 2.5gb for x64 (all without pagefile/hiberfile) ive decided not to go extreme on the next set and keep as much funtionality as possible :P

ps x64 will have netfx 3.5, printer and wifi support. server r2 will probably remain the same as is without netfx3, printer & wifi support

Is it allowable that I make some minor changes to vLite preset file? I mean, if supposedly I want to remove other components, and keep some components which should be removed in original preset, do I have to modify the dism7x.bat and rem7x.bat accordingly as well? Yes, I know that sticking to the original preset will have the highest chance of having functional vlited Windows image, but making some minor changes to the preset will not hurt, right?
