I have the exact same issue after doing the load out 3 times. Sadly not savy enough to hunt the problem down myself but I skipped the removal.bat on the last one to produce the same error so I think if I back up enough I will find the cause of the issue.

I am curious though is there a FAQ on the removal.bat and ultimate64.bat that explains the process or a guide to educate yourself on the process? I never had issues before trying this guide out just using vlite and 7 WAIK except the fact updates failed etc.

you can make changes but if you keep anything that was removed from the original preset, you might have to edit the batch files too

Yes I set the folders up exactly how the guide had them. I took the setup.exe from my windows OS disc as instructed and put it in S1 Sources folder and deleted everything in the Sources folder (nothing outside the Sources folder) except for the boot.wim,install.wim & setup.exe. Did I perhaps not understand that step correctly?


I did change the original vlite settings but only for Japanese Language (as I need it) and disabled some services that I usually disable once I boot my OS up anyways. Would you like my .ini?

Well unless I am mistaken it said to copy it from the ISO aka my CD which is where I did it. Is that correct? I will need a few hours before I can post my vlite last session when I get home. I left the original .ini as you had it...I just added some services that I disable based off BlackViper website under "tweaked" however mind you the original 3 attempts I just used your default.ini with nothing changed.

your lastsession seems to be fine. is it just the missing cd/dvd driver error you are getting during install? also in regards to the setup.exe, did you copy over the setup file from the root of your cd

Yes it was a dummy issue I am afraid. I had some time so I started looking in your batch files and I finally understood what you mean in your faq by changing the drive letter on Ultimatex64.bat so that fixed one issue as I am C: not D:. The other issue I caused was I took setup.exe from the primary folder and not from sources on my Windows Disc. So I can now install without issues. Total size was 1.30GB with Japanese Language. Thank you so far.

However I recently made a boot USB and I got a error after the initial install of Windows that I got again on a DVD disc. Here is a picture (bit bright) http://yfrog.com/f/j772569784j/ It went through the initial install and reboots....then the services screen and on the following reboot this error message pops up. Any idea what it could be?

thats one of the difficult things to narrow down as it could be any file that may have been removed from the winsxs folder. make sure you are using the latest guide in the first post which has a newer set of batch files. ive only deleted files from the winsxs folder that were linked to the packages which were removed in the dism stage.

I would like to suggest that you add the following statement (in bold) inside your first post and your guide.pdf as well:

You need to copy the setup.exe from the original sources folder, 260 KB (not the one in the root of the image, 104 KB) to the vlited sources folder.

I guess that some of us, including I, have mistakenly used the setup.exe from the root of image, thus the installation fails with the "Setup complained about a missing CD/DVD driver" error. It was kind of silly for me to perform such mistake.

On a side note, I slightly modified your preset so that I can still use the Windows Experience Index. However, Windows Experience Index cannot be computed as a Windows states that it could not measure video playback performance. So, how should I modify the batch files to get it running again?

Another problem aside is that I cannot turn off Windows Gadget Platform, on " Turn On or Off Windows Features". Somehow, I can't remove Snipping Tool and Welcome Centre via vLite. Any idea on this? Should I remove Magnification.dll from being protected in order to remove Snipping Tool?

Minor glitches aside, it is a great, slim and yet still functional Windows installation. Thanks, dead0!

Well I tried the (29/10/09) x64final.zip today and I still received the same error after the 3rd part of windows install as the older batch files. Any information you need just let me know if you are able to troubleshoot something like this.

Also a small question on your removal.bat is there any negative effects to deleting the "pause" lines so I don't have to sit there the entire 20-30 minutes while it removes stuff? It didn't seem to effect it (tried with and without same error on install) but thought id make sure.

i am working on a refresh at the moment where the ms updates will be optional

ps in the refresh, printer/wifi/netfx3 (except for R2) is kept but untested. bitlocker is enabled in all and i tried to clean up the batch files as much as i could as it will take too long if i started from scratch by manually deleting the winsxs files, test in vm, then delete more, test again...etc

you might need to keep the disk diagnosis package in dism removal stage? vlite breaks windows features so you either remove gadgets with vlite or dism. snipping tool can be removed via dism but the welcome center cant be removed with either unless you manually delte while the image is mounted.

ps i think i will remove WCF/WPF 3/3.5 using vlite (using -extreme switch) so the option will still remain on whether to keep or not

I think that we can remove more font using the batch file. Attached herewith are additonal fonts I have removed. So far, Windows remains functional. If there is any problem, please let me know.

i tend to use some of those fonts so i left them in but they can be removed. on my new batches, there shouldn't be many deletion required of the winsxs folder as most of the folders are zero bytes so you could just remove them from the fonts folder without tinkering in the winsxs
