Oh I see thank you. BTW I noticed a odd issue today on my 40GB test drive. The install size of windows is showing up as 11GB but that seems to big considering a full install is only a little bigger...winsxs folder is 260mb and hibernation/system restore is disabled. Installed it twice with the same results. Could perhaps something else be running that I am not thinking of? Unpacked it shows it as 3.7GB...so not sure where the space being used is.

if you only used my lastsessions and haven't edited the batch files, the unpacked size should roughly be just over 2gb?! how big is your pagefile?

Yeah followed your session to a T and unpacked with gimage its 3.7GB unpacked and my pagefile is set to 4GB by default (max ram). Total install size on my final install was 9GB so not really sure what happened to make it smaller as I didn't change anything and did a full format on the drive each time I reinstalled the OS. ISO size is 825mb.

The OS however is stable and working...just not sure where this extra space is coming from yet.

*Edit*
Also I am curious do you have a list of everything you removed on your batch files etc or perhaps you know a good source guide so I could manually track everything down so I can add/remove on the batch files based off personal preference if I wanted to add something?

your iso size seems to be right! open up the install.wim with 7zip and see how big the size is?

then that should be the rough install size excluding pagefile, system restore points, hiberfile. download treesize from here http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/ and see how large the following folders are program files, windows, windows/assembly, system32, syswow64, winsxs and then compare them to sizes in your install.wim

Will do later tonight and will get back to you.

*edit*
Well booted it up and it seems pagefile and hiberfil.sys is taking most the space.

I am guessing hiber = hibernation so I can delete that but seems I will need to move pagefile to my mechanical drive when I go SSD. Not sure of the side-effects by deleting it but I imagine it has its uses. I imagine it would not be good on a SSD life span with all the small writes it probably does on a daily basis. :P

Odd part is hibernation is disabled and has been before reboot...not sure why it made the file ~_~

I would appreciate if you could provide some advice to me. After removing a lot more components from vLite than what is recommended from your vLite preset, I encountered NLS file corrupt error after first restart for Windows installation (the boot when Windows installs services and devices). So far, I can't pinpoint the source of this error. If you have any idea regarding this matter, please let me know. Otherwise, never mind. No problem, I will just revert to your original preset.

hey sir dead0

While doing the process, I got stuck up on Step 13 that I need to mount again my install.wim and went fine so opening the batch (for x86) it's says

"Access Denied" <<-- something like that....both x86.bat and delx86.bat (when deleting the files...)

What should I do??

Hi!

Thanks for this great guide!
I have a little problem with my printer. I have an OfficeJet HP 6315 and it says that windows can't find a controller for my printer.
I tried with Windows Update and using my original driver files, but seems that need some basic controller that was on Windows. I tried to manualy install from extract files and not success.
I tried again to compile all without batch file (don't remove winsx files) but removing printer drivers support with dism, and it works correctly, so I imagine that the problem is we are removing some basic/standard controller needed for some printers.

In the other side, I recomend to not disable TV turner Support in your guide, as with the same filesize final on windows Installed, I can see .wtv files (Are files recorded from Windows media Center from TV).

Thanks

Well, I have solved my problem. I Have windows 7 ultimate.

I Compile all without using the batch 7x86.bat (not removing the windows files nor the winsx cache on vlite)
I installed Windows7. After, installing all drivers. All is fine and no problems with printer.

After this, I assign permissions to "windows" and "program files" folders and execute 7x86.bat from root. All files were removed correctly and the system is working without problems. The only is missing is removing winsx cache from vlite, but the result is fine:

Using the guide, my final size of windows was: 2,01 Gb (without hibernation and pagefile.sys) but problems with printer and some with windows Update
Now, using my setup, my final size of windows is: 2,13 Gb (without hibernation and pagefile.sys). Printer and windows Update working well.

I have a backup with Norton ghost and I have a perfect system to enjoy every time I want.

Thanks for all!!

I am curious if I wanted to save Aero/Glass what would I need to remove to keep it? Default Windows 7 Theme/sounds is what I usually use. I toyed around with it but I can't seem to get it right. This is the only feature you removed that I actually did use. We have very similar tastes in OS preferences :)

with the current files, the default windows aero and sounds is kept. they have not been removed! you might need to check your graphics drivers if aero glass is not working?

ps make sure you are not using home premium x64. for some odd reason, the dism removal and batch files do not work properly with that version.

Well firstly thank you and that is strange....I am using Ultimate x64 and Pro x64 (won ultimate 2 weeks after I gave in and bought it) and I am unable to get it to work. Example being (This is ultimate x64...yet to put my key due to save myself a phone call) default settings based off your guide. Nothing else touched far as I know.

Gives me a error about Aero...when I select it just does a never ending "checking" mode. Here is a image of that box.

I tried loading a pre-made theme off the main download site and it didn't enable glass either. That second image is when I select "windows color" on my default install it opens up transparancy/color. It boots up a more "default XP" style setup now.
I have the newest nvidia drivers thinking maybe because we removed a lot of packages that maybe default drivers were too. No effect. Usually it is enabled through the WEI but I think its been removed as it says unavailable.

*edit*
BTW something really strange happened...for giggles on my last install I installed .net 4.0 and it actually installed..made its own process in services (next to 2.0 disabled) and seems to be working LOL. Not sure if this means anything just found it amusing as I figured it wouldn't have.

Well I can use my I5 system this time and make another ISO see if perhaps my system hiccuped as I still used it for work while it made the install. Will try and reinstall see what happens.

*edit
So strange...I took one more look before I did the format (after seeing your SS) and now "Aero Theme" has popped up and seems to be working.

I have not touched this drive since last night...nothing has been installed other then Nvidia drivers which was done a week ago. I am curious any idea why for multiple formats it would just pop up to say hi? Perhaps the nvidia driver I used last week didn't install properly when I updated it last night?

more than likely it was a driver issue?

Hi guys. I have small problem with my custom windows 7 image. When I test it in vmware it me the folowing error:

"A required cd\dvd device driver is missing. If you have a floppy disk, cd, dvd, or usb flash drive, please insert it now."

I followed the tutorial exactly and I don't know what's wrong. Pherhaps someone could enlighten me. Thanks

Yes because Win 7 lite driver folder doesnt have my graphics card drivers so it errors but as soon as I install its drivers it works fine

but am now having trouble with the new iso:-

you need to install ms visual c++ 2008 (x86/64) runtimes and maybe 2005 versions as well

for the game, you could probably extract the folder from the winsxs directory from install.wim before you do any removal and save it onto a usb, then try to run it post install?
