Windows 7 RTM (32 & 64 Bit) *UPDATED*

Feature Removal & Optimization Guide

Developed By Liquid0624 & Written By Liquidzgurl

After working diligently, I have decided to release some of my best work for you; so that you may enjoy Windows 7 with a new appreciation, like me. I sincerely hope that my efforts bring you just as much enjoyment, if not more than they have for me personally. What I am going to provide for you will enable you with the tools to help you create a LITE version of Windows 7. Installing a LITE version of Windows 7, will help you achieve a more COMPACT version of Windows that is still completely functional, remain very stable, perform more efficiently, cut your system's memory usage in half by tweaking services and greatly reduce the hard drive space being used.

This is done by removing packages and components that are built in to Windows 7, in addition to performing system service tweaks. If you DO NOT wish to alter the built in features, modify the functionality or the stability of your Windows 7 Operating System in any way, PLEASE STOP NOW and DO NOT CONTINUE any FURTHER!

By utilizing the attachments on this post you must be aware: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! NOONE on this forum will be held accountable for any data loss, errors or issues that you encounter. If you are concerned about losing data, my suggestion to you is to create an image using software such as Acronis True Image. Also, everything in this guide has to be done by you, the end user; a released image of a LITE install CANNOT be released due to legality. Software activation is also your OWN responsibility, and NOTHING included will activate ANY software.

If you use the materials attached and find that you are struggling or encounter errors, please reply to THIS post with your questions for assistance. My reference to THIS POST, is to eliminate the confusion of new posts on the board and it will also keep everything together for others to benefit the most from your questions as well as solutions that will all be contained within ONE location. Also, if you encounter an error, please refrain from posting an error log within the body field of your reply; instead attach your log. It is extremely frustrating for users when a lengthy error log is displayed within the text causing users to page through multiple pages to follow postings. It will also greatly reduce the time it takes for replies with a solution to be posted for you for this same reason. Feel free to summarize information about the error in your reply. I just ask that you PLEASE refrain from including the actual contents of any Error Logs or vLite Presets inside the reply and attach it to the post instead.

You will see that there are nine attachments included with THIS POST. It will be too difficult to go into great detail about each individual attachment, but I will do my best to provide you with an accurate summary for them. There are a total of six archives; two pdf formatted word documents and one excel spreadsheet in pdf format. The six archives are the compressed files needed to create an install image for a LITE version of Windows 7, for which I will list the contents below in more detail; including a summary of key features that are NOT being removed (components being KEPT). To reduce hard drive space further after installing Windows 7, you can disable the paging file; turn off hibernation support, as well as compress the entire hard disk (including the winsxs folder). There are three archives that are designed for the 32 bit processor architecture and three that are designed for the 64 bit processor architecture.

The two pdf formatted word documents are easy to follow with step by step instructions to help walk you through this enduring process. One is for 32 bit, the other is for 64 bit architecture, depending on which one you choose. An important note regarding architecture: 32 bit can ONLY create a 32 bit install; 64 bit has the capability to EITHER create a 32 or 64 bit. The excel spreadsheet in pdf format, 7packages.pdf; is conveniently color coded and lists all the packages in Windows.

The components being KEPT and NOT being removed are as follows:

7ELITE (32 & 64 BIT)
  • Accessories (Notepad, Paint, Wordpad)
  • Hardware Support (Printer Support, Windows Image Acquisition, WLAN Support)
  • Multimedia (Media & Photo Metadata Handlers, Aero Theme, Media Player & Codecs)
  • Network (DFS, File & Printer Sharing, Internet Explorer, LLTD, Network & Sharing Center, QoS, Firewall)
  • System (Component Cache (winsxs), MDAC, Microsoft HTML Engine, UAC, Picture & Fax Viewer)
7MEDIA (32 & 64 BIT)
  • Accessories (Character Map, Disk Cleanup, Notepad, Paint, Wordpad, Windows Sidebar & Gadgets)
  • Hardware Support (Infrared Support, Printer Support, TV Tuner Support, Windows Image Acquisition, WLAN Support)
  • Multimedia (Media Center, Media & Photo Metadata Handlers, Aero Theme, Media Player & Codecs)
  • Network (DFS, File & Printer Sharing, Internet Explorer, LLTD, Network & Sharing Center, QoS, Remote Desktop, Firewall)
  • System (Component Cache (winsxs), MDAC, Microsoft HTML Engine, SQM, UAC, Picture & Fax Viewer)
7XTREME (32 & 64 BIT)
  • Accessories (Notepad, Paint, Wordpad)
  • Hardware Support (Printer Support, Windows Image Acquisition, WLAN Support)
  • Multimedia (Media & Photo Metadata Handlers, Aero Theme)
  • Network (DFS, Network & Sharing Center, QoS, Firewall)
  • System (Component Cache (winsxs), MDAC, Microsoft HTML Engine, UAC, Picture & Fax Viewer)
FOR 7XTREME ONLY: When installing the LITE version of Windows 7 that you created, you will need to register the "ieproxy.dll" file when removing Internet Explorer. This needs to be done immediately after installing, when the computer boots to the desktop for the first time. The file "ieproxy.dll" is located in the Windows System32 folder. This can be done using Run or Command Prompt. Type the following: regsvr32 "C:\Windows\System32", then press ENTER. Then, a dialog box will appear saying that the file was registered successfully; then click and OK reboot your system. The reason this needs to be done is to prevent Windows Explorer or Computer, from opening multiple windows when you are browsing through the directories. It will also ensure that the feature; Safely Remove Hardware & Eject Media will continue to work, while also remaining enabled in the system tray.

A summary of the contents of each attached archive are as follows:
  • batch (folder containing all the batch scripts currently being used)
  • cleanup.bat (file that removes excess waste after using DISM and vLite)
  • commit.bat (commits changes to install.wim and unmounts the current image)
  • discard.bat (unmounts install.wim and discards changes made during the session)
  • mount.bat (mounts install.wim to the defined location inside the setupcfg.txt text file)
  • removal.bat (removes all user defined packages for the current edition within it, using DISM)
  • setupcfg.txt (points the scripts to the correct locations of the source, mount, and wtools folders)
  • source (folder, which will ultimately contain the entire contents of your Windows 7 DVD or Image)
  • wtools (folder, that contains install_wim_tweak.exe and also where you will be placing imagex.exe)
IMPORTANT NOTE: You MUST use the Automated Installation Kit for Windows Vista SP1. Do NOT use the Automated Installation Kit for Windows 7 RTM or you will encounter issues preventing successful completion.

Lastly, I hope these attachments are helpful for all of you who choose to utilize them. I hope the hard work and dedication that was put into this guide and tools make this process as easy as possible. If you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to reply to this post. I or another experienced user will be happy to assist you. Many thanks goes out to Jeronimo, Dead, & SausageHack because with out them this guide would not have been possible! :thumbup :hello:

This is a really well put together guide! The notes in the excel sheet are fantastic! :thumbup

Some thoughts:
I would upload the documentation to a different host since that one requires an email address to get a download link.
I think UAC should be included in 7elite32 and not 7media.
It would help to know what the final install size of each method would be before choosing.

I am going through the 7elite32 process right now and its easy to follow and no bumps so far :)

[edit]
I changed the index in both mount and removal to 5 for Ultimate, and during removal there was an error when removing Networking-MPSSVC-Rules-HomePremiumEdition-Package.
Copied wimgapi.dll to vLite folder since it wasn't detecting WAIK properly. Might be worth reminding.
I unchecked UAC in vLite.
I had a problem with setup asking for a CD/DVD driver which was resolved by copying the sources\setup.exe to \sources\, I had originally copied .\setup.exe to .\sources which was wrong.
Wouldn't install on 4GB SSD, said it required 3966 MB free space. 7xtreme here I come :P

Digerati, thank you for the compliments on the guide from both liquid and myself thanks go out to all the other users who contributed as well which liquid will be editing in to the original post also. :) Your suggestion about install size is a very good one which we had considered originally including though chose not to as the size could vary greatly when users change the components and packages being removed. Liquid will not be online again until tommorow but said that the error you received if it was the only one it should not adversly affect your ending install. I hope it all continues to go smoothly for you again thank you for the compliments and have a great night. Ps he only used file hosting due to upload size limitations on the post which I'm sure you're aware of but any suggestions on another free host or can the limit be increased on this post at our request since he only needs about another 400kb ?

Very nice guide, but it seems to break Bitlocker/TPM and Backup/restore I need those to work, anything I can do to keep it working in all 3 versions?

Can't go without saying THANKS SO MUCH!

Excellent guide mate!
I (and I think every other user looking for some guidance) appreciate the amount of work you put into this.

Thank you very, very much indeed!!!

Edit 1:
Just finished testing. Works great!
I used 7elite64, and got errors with the same packages that blerk mentioned, but carried on and finished it. The result is very good, and works very well indeed.

Again, thanks for the excellent guide!

Edit 2:
---!---

Edit 3:
Local security policy appears in 'Administrative tools', but can't be used. It only displays an error: 'MMC could not create snap-in'.
Does anyone know what might be causing this???

to fix the local security policy editor issue you need to uncheck DFS replication under the network tree in vlite and that should fix that the other error will be updated shortly and fixed in the update by liquid hopefully later tonight check back for his update and reply on that

Tried the windows 7 x64 home premium version with 7media64 plugins and ini.

Installed flawlessly on Intel RAID ( I unchecked intel drivers from vlite). Group policy is not working, but I forgot to uncheck DFS replication as mentioned in earlier posts.

Great work! I really appreciate your hardwork and efforts!

@luquidzgurl & @all I successfully installed sources from both 7elite32 and 7xtreme32 for Ultimate and Home Premium without any problems other then complaints on those edition specific packages. :)
I was trying to install to an Asus 900A Eee PC with a 4GB SSD and I ultimately used 7xtreme but retained UAC and some network components (for file/printer sharing) which were in the 7elite preset (thanks winmerge).

;# Network #
File and printer sharing (Server)
Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD)
Network Explorer
;# Services #
Computer Browser
DNS Client
TCP/IP NetBios Helper
;# System #
User Account Control (UAC)

I should mention that Windows Setup refused to install on the 4GB drive because it is conservative with estimating for a page file. So I booted WinPE and applied the install.wim using imagex and made it bootable with bcdboot.

imagex /apply <path>\install.wim 1 x:
bcdboot x:windows /s x:

Audio, LAN, and WLAN worked "out of the box". Then I disabled hibernation by running "powercfg -h off", installed Intel video drivers from Windows Update to get Aero working, and Office 2007, Google Chrome, Foxit Reader, FlashFire, and 125% DPI. :)

As for filehosting I'd recommend mediafire.com, it's got no wait times, is ad free and no registration to download. There is a good list at wikipedia too
http://en.wikipedia....osting_services

I don't have the ability to change attachment options, that would probably require xper's help.

Just finished installing my new build (now keeping DFS from network tree components), but 'secpol.msc' is still a no-go...
Like before, it doesn't even appears in 'system32' folder. I found it on one folder inside 'winsxs', and copied it to 'system32' to see if then it would run, but it says the same message than before (MMC could not create snap-in).

Along with the other administrative tools that are missing, that's the only problem I could find. All the rest goes quite smoothly.
Anyway, gonna see if I can find some kind of replacement/workaround for the administrative tools I use; but if I don't find one, I'm still going to use this build on my system!. It's just so good that I can live without those tools.

If anyone has another idea about packages that might cause administrative tools to dissapear or fail to run, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks
Nico

I also didn't get gpedit.msc running eventhough DFS was selected.

Another problem which I can point out is, Office 2010 is showing error while getting installed

---------------------------
Setup
---------------------------
Error 1907. Could not register font . Verify that you have sufficient permissions to install fonts, and that the system supports this font.
---------------------------
Abort Retry Ignore
---------------------------

I think few fonts or some dependency is missing here!

Moreover, ICS cannot be started while sharing a LAN connection via adhoc wireless connection!

I think all the accessories EXCEPT sidebar/gadgets should be in the elite version. And UAC should NOT be in the elite version.

just my opinion, thx! =]

Hi liquid0624,

First of all i really appriciate your hardwork and the nice step by step guide.
I used 7elite32. Everything went smoothly and i am able to create the ISO. I load the ISO to my VM (VMware 6.5) and i can't even get the windows to be install. It is looking for a device driver ( for the hard drive ??) strange!!. ( Please refer to the attached image for details)

I change my VM ( from using scsi HDD to IDE HDD). Not working either,
I burn the ISO and try to install to my Tx2z.. same error.

I decided to rebuild everything from stratch same erroer message when i try to install win7.

Please help.

Thanks a lot.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok. i figure out what is wrong.

It is in Step #20. The setup.exe (239k) file should be from the "sources" folder. not the setup.exe in the DVD's Root.

Please update the guide in case people make stupid mistake like me.

Thanks again.

I just tested your guide (7elite64) with a german Win 7 RTM image and it seems to work, only the "Microsoft-Windows-LocalPack"s are not included in the image and DISM gives error about that. On the second vLite run, I integrated my device drivers and in the VM everything seems fine. I'm going to test it on real machine now. :)

Thanks in advance mate! Very good work!

I did try all possible check and unchecks in vlite, but still can't seem to get my ICS going! I am using 7media 64 settings.

I have 8187l realtek wireless and Marvell Yukon ethernet on Asus P5WDH Dx mobo.

Can someone suggest what is it that I am missing out that is preventing me from getting ICS started through Marvel Yukon? Can't seem to get the error code too, which is (null)!

--------------
I tried same settings on my laptop broadcom LAN and intel 5100agn wireless option. Still I am unable to start ICS.

@khchan I'm sorry if I sound a little rude or snippy by all means if you have a suggestion as to a better description about the setup.exe within the "sources" folder please enlighten me however it is clearly stated in step 20 that setup.exe was added to "sources" in step 4 and then deleted and it must be copied from your installation DVD in step 20 which continues to go on to pasting it back into "sources" in step 21 because you now need it again correct me if I'm wrong here and please if you have any suggestions liquid and I are open to updating the guide with something that is better

Thanks again for your hard work.
