I have installed a completely clean Server 2008 R2 having previsoulsy using Server 2008 with no issues (just exploring new capabilities). I joined my Windows 7 client to the domain. On the DC I have 2008R2, DNS and DHCP installed and on the client I have automatically assigned IP/DNS. By the way, I disable the Windows Firewall on very box I own,including the server and client in this discussion. My server is configured to allow remote desktop connections.

The DC has a static IP (10.1.1.2) and I have configured the preferred DNS on the IP settings of this server as 127.0.0.1. As far as I can tell all my DNS and DHCP settings are ok.

When I ping the server from the client, it resolves the address then I get time-outs most of the time.
When I browse my network on the client I see all the machines, including VM's on the network.
I can't Remote Desktop from my Win 7 client to my server, but I can RD the other way around.
In the network and sharing centre of the client Often it seems to loose the network (proofofconcept.local) and then when I diagnose I'll get it back but like... proofofconcept.local 2, and then 3 and so on.
I can access the internet but when the above happens (getting back the network) I have to diagnose to get my internet connection to work. After that the internet connection appears stable.

I have very erratic network performance on the client. I have run ipconfig and all looks well. I have used dynamic IP/DNS configuration and also manually entered the IP of the DC/DNS, to no avail.

Everything was fine before I flattened the server and installed 2008 R2, and all my hardware is less than 6 months old.

Where to from here guys?

Edit 8-Oct - My login's seem very quick now, as they were before I installed 2008 R2, but network performance is still lacking. I have ping -t running in a console window. When I try and remote desktop into ny 2008 RS server, the ping starts to time out. When the RDP session connects (eventually) the screen updates are poor.

Still looking for answers as to what might be going on as I've not really done anything to vary from a standard out of the box installation other than configured DNS and DHCP.

Probably the network card driver.

Try using another Network Card.


Also the Firewall might be causing the RDP connection problems.

I resolved this by disabling all the Large Send Offload settings on the server NIC and in virtual machine NIC settings
