"wimfilter" was deleted from vLite by some reason.

Now I need to know the reason due to some user-created tools
at "German-WinLite.de" - I don`t want to meet MS-Lawyers.

Does anybody know why nuhi removed the wimfilter?

This was discussed in length many, many times on this forum.

Nuhi did NOT want to have a Autopatcher-type situation where vLite gets shut down completly by MS.

In the documentation for WAIK it says you cannot distribute any part or whole of it.

THX Kel, I know about the endless threads.

Background of my question is, that somebody at "German-WinLite"
has written a tool containing the wimfilter again.
I´m owner of the forum, so I wanted to know more about it.

In fact - would YOU release that tool, or is it better not to release?
I´m pretty unsure about that, sorry.

MS has been getting pretty thick about issues like this.

If it was MY forum I wouldn't do it.

Well, of course in the end it's up to you, but redistributing any files from the WAIK does violate the EULA that expressly forbids redistribution of the components from the WAIK package and the copyright Microsoft has on those binaries. Obviously we don't allow it here for those reasons, and it's the reason nuhi removed the file from his application (not wanting to have happen to him what happened to the AutoPatcher folks). Microsoft is pretty harsh in it's dealings with copyright violations, so I'd steer clear to be safe.

If I may, and given as a firm point that breaking a License or Eula is NOT a smart thing to do, apparently all Autopatcher got was a "cease and desist" letter:
http://www.autopatch...007/08/sad-day/
http://web.archive.org/web/20080415190740/...takedown-notice

Nothing major happened, the "old" Autopatcher has been subsided by a "new" Autopatcher", working a little bit differently.

http://www.autopatcher.com/2007/09/the-nex...whats-in-store/

Please note how the letter dos NOT relate to the EULA, but on the Copyright Laws.

@g-force
Is wimfltr.sys the only "problematic" file?

Just in case:

All kinds of .wims can now be accessed with 7-zip, now, depending on what is the "wimfilter" needed, it may be an alternative.

Hi, jaclaz! :hello:
Since which version of 7-zip, please? I perused the links you gave, but failed to ascertain that... :blushing:

You mean which exact version?

It's not in the history:
http://www.7-zip.org/history.txt

the change:

Quote

4.49 beta 2007-07-11
-------------------------
- 7-Zip now can unpack WIM archives.

is NOT entirely accurate, at the time 7-zip did support only some types of WIM.

The actual "full" support was added in 4.59 Beta:
http://encode.ru/for...read.php?p=2791

Some talk is here:
http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?...=8860&st=16
and on the for the moment at least abandoned project:

Well, that`s the point. I will not allow to re-destribute it.

THX @ All for your advices and taking time.
