After not being able to play a .wav file, I decided to have a look at my LastSession.ini and found that I had selected this tweak: Windows Media Player-Disable automatic codec download.
This is the first time I've actually needed it, since I use the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, which includes FFDShow. Although I have enabled all codecs even remotely related with the .WAV format, the files I need still won't play.
Does anybody know how to re-enable this option, so I could possibly download the codec?

Thank you for your suggestions

Sp0iLedBrAt, I found this via Google. I don't think it will not do what you asked for, but should correct your problem. Enjoy, John.

Thank you both; following the link Radix provided, I found this value: PreventCodecDownload=1 in the Registry Editor and changed it to 0. That did the trick right away.
