Hi,

I am a newbee networker and need help. I have two MS 2000 boxes, a Xp box, and a 98 box that I would like to share a local printer and files. All boxes currently go through a DSL Router and have Internet access. However, I do not know how to make them all see each other and share files/printer. CAn anybody help me?

if they can all access the internet then everything should be working. Make sure you see the computers by going to my computer and choosing network places on the left panel and wait a min and all the computers should be there. You should make sure that your actually sharing the drives and printers.

The Windows 98 box is a bit more complicated to get on a network.

on the desktop, right click Network Neighbourhood and select Properties.

You need to have:

TCP/IP
Client for Microsoft Networks

Click on the "File and Print Sharing" button and tick both boxes to enable F&P sharing on that machine and get it network ready.

Have the Primary Network Logon as "Client for Microsoft Networks"

If you still ahve probs on the 98 machine, you may need to enable these network protocols:

NetBEUI

To add any network protocols or services, click "add".

Also, on the "Identification" tab, make sure that the workgroup/domain is the same as your other computers. You must have a unique computer name.

Here is a tutorial with images that may help.

XP to 98

As mendipjohn has stated use TCP/IP and you should be able to connect all three OS..

If NETBIOS traffic is prohibited by your ISP, you will not be able to share files/printers.
