Thank you. Ok will do. Do you think I have messed the prefetch up by deleting the pf files? Not that I will do this again but should I of just deleted all the files on the folder and not the pf ones because old data still existed and conflicted? I find it strange that the prefetch seems to work until about the 6th or 7th boot and then something goes wrong. Hopefully the latest optimisation did the trick as its been 8 boots since and currently seems ok.

don't do anything with the Prefetch folder. Leave the files as they are.

MagicAndre1981, urgent question: after having completed the entire process, can I uninstall the Performance Toolkit and SDK? Will it keep all the optimizations?

I'm guessing it's safe to uninstall, since it just optimizes existing services. But I just want to make sure. It's for a customer and I usually just like to remove all the maintenance software after I'm done with it, to prevent them from ruining their own computer.

Anyway, I really can't thank you enough for this tutorial!! You gave me an automated (= quick & low-cost) method of seriously improving boot performance. Especially on Vista machines. Awesome!

Yes, uninstal is safe, but do the 30MB used by WPT really hurt you? If yes, keep the MSI files so that you can reinstall the WPT again if needed a second time.

Ok, cool. Thanks! It's not so much the space it takes up. I just want to prevent customers from running software they don't understand. A lot of people I encounter just press buttons without thinking.

Bit of a background story:
For instance, I install ccleaner on customer's pc's. I schedule it to run once a week silently and I remove it from the start menu. This way they won't start tinkering with the settings themselves, without knowing what they're doing. Like, one day they'll check the Cookies box and then..."ZOMG, I'm not logged into teh Fazebookz anymore and can't remember my password! It's all Miletos' fault for installing that evil ccleaner software!"

Maybe I'll just remove the shortcuts for the Performance Kit from the start menu, but I'd rather just uninstall it to prevent them from ever finding it.

on Windows 7 you can use AppLocker to block software that users should not use. And WPT requires admin rights and if the users don't have such an account they can't run the toolkit.

I will try and run a boot trace soon on my machine. Although can I ask about the layout.ini file in the prefetch folder? I did the optimization a couple of times last week. After the last optimization the layout.ini file was updated 17/12/2011 but it hasn't updated itself since. I was under the impression it updates itself every 3 days but I quickly turned the laptop on this morning and it still shows date of 17/12/2011 as last modified. Do you think something is broken here? Does the laptop need a certain amount of idle time for it to update itself?

Thank you for this, now my pc boots just 19 seconds , which is extremely good for a HDD.

I don't know why the file is not updated. Mine was updated yesterday. But I didn't modify anything in the folder while you did this.

your Windows boots in 17.3s. Substract 10s (idle detection time) from the value BootDoneViaPostBoot or add the value of postBootDisturbance to bootDoneViaExplorer to see the boot time.

Hi Andre,

I just wondered which anti virus suite you use and/ or recommend? I currently use Microsoft security essentials which is better than mcafee but still slow at start up.

i have problem..
i hav prob with the tools..
i had used it b4 but it seems to fail now..
here the screenshot..
btw i checked on the ready boost service..
but i cant found them anywhere..
i tried to find it in task manager's services tabs and in services.msc but cant found one..
the superfetch registry value is 3 while the superfetch services launched properly..
plz help..
im using win 7 64x btw..

open regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction Is the value Enable set to "Y". Is the prefetcher value also 3?
