How to get the cause of high CPU usage by DPC / Interrupt

Hi Sean,

the trace shows the same:

Total = 35412342 for module HDAudBus.sys

Elapsed Time, > 0 usecs AND <= 1 usecs, 1083816, or 3.06%

Elapsed Time, > 1 usecs AND <= 2 usecs, 24505101, or 69.20%

Elapsed Time, > 2 usecs AND <= 4 usecs, 9688246, or 27.36%

Elapsed Time, > 4 usecs AND <= 8 usecs, 52523, or 0.15%

Elapsed Time, > 8 usecs AND <= 16 usecs, 4960, or 0.01%

Elapsed Time, > 16 usecs AND <= 32 usecs, 75286, or 0.21%

Elapsed Time, > 32 usecs AND <= 64 usecs, 2410, or 0.01%

the highest spikes are between 32 and 64µs and most DPCs only take between 1 and 4µs. So the HDAudBus.sys is fine. This is not the cause:

Only the ACPI driver is a bit too high:

Total = 1044 for module ACPI.sys

Elapsed Time, > 0 usecs AND <= 1 usecs, 0, or 0.00%

Elapsed Time, > 1 usecs AND <= 2 usecs, 0, or 0.00%

this is mostly BIOS related. So update the BIOS and which power plan do you use? Also try to stop the Acer ePower Management Software and look again if you have new issues. Does it happen when the laptop runs with Battery or if you run the laptop with normal AC power from AC power sockets?

Updating the BIOS helped a little. However, I'm still convinced that something is wrong with the audio. If there hypothetically was, what steps could I take to solve this?

have you loaded the default BIOS setting? Have you removed the Acer tool and used the balanced power plan of Windows 7?

If this doesn't fix it, create a new trace. But this time only capture 30 - 60 seconds. Otherwise the trace is very large and slow to handle with the viewer.

the acpi.sys is called by the BATTC.SYS (BattCWorkerThread). so check the battery. Remove it while using AC power and check if this fixes it. You can also unintall the battery from the device manager, reboot and let Windows install the battery again. This also solved high CPU usage for some users. If this doesn't fix, request a recharge of the battery. I don't know if your battery supports this.

And next time, don't do illegal torrent downloads while making the trace ;)
