- change article for SmartCard_XP_x86.exe to KB952013 and change folder to HF/HFSVCPACK_SW1 (you can put this update to HF, if you rename it to WindowsXP-KB952013-x86-lang.exe);

Isn't it easier to put it to HFSVCPACK_SW1 instead of renaming it? Or is the result "better" when it's in HF?

When you put this update to HFSVCPACK_SW1 it's installed in T-13. When you put it to HF and rename it, it'll be slipstreamed directly as the most of updates.

OK, HF sounds better! :D I'll notice it on the list.

Yes. The content of table 2 (Security updates) should be mandatory but the optional things [...]

Hello Mim0,

I'm sorry but I do not fully agree, these contents are not all mandatory. So here are some remarks from my side regarding table 2 (security updates):
  • First of all, I think it makes not much sense to list updates for components that are by default not installed. In this case they should have a note explaining that they're usually not useful or necessary. This applies at least to the following entries:
    • MS09-023 (Windows Search 4.0): Windows Search 4.0 is not part of a standard Win XP SP3. You do not even have it in the list of optional updates...
    • MS09-051, KB969878 (DirectShow WMA Voice Codec): Applies only to systems with Media Player 9, as also the name of the update indicates. If the user slipstreams or installs WMP11, this update is neither necessary nor reported by WU/MU.
    • MS09-053 (FTP for IIS): IIS is not installed by default. Including this update does not hurt, but it is also not absolutely required.
    • MS09-066 (Active Directory): The same. ADAM is only present in the system if manually downloaded and installed by a user (which is by the way possible only for XP Professional, not XP Home), so listing this update is questionable.
    • M08-069 (XML Core Services): While MSXML3 and MSXML6 are part of Win XP SP3, MSXML4 (SP3) is not! It is only present in the system if intentionally installed by the user. As not having the library in the system at all is even more secure than having a patched version (with probably yet unknown security issues), it should not blindly be listed here - MSXML4 is not essential, so the recommendation is to skip it completely...
  • KB955759 (Indeo Codec advisory) is strongly recommended but not mandatory. Therefore it is more of optional character than a definitive must, although mentioning it in table 2 is still appropriate I guess.
And then I have some comments regarding table 3 (optional updates):
  • KB952287 (MDAC update): Same issue as before. This update is relevant only for systems with installed MS SQL server (which the standard user does _not_ have). Doesn't cause harm if included, but still superfluous (we're talking about lean installations, aren't we? ;)).
    Update 2009/01/03: Strange enough, but this is indeed reported by MU/WU when not installed :huh:. So everything okay with listing it.
  • KB967715 (Autorun update): The registry file linked here and provided by Mupper Hunter is over-perfect. The "HonorAutorunSetting" is already set by the update itself and correctly considered by hfslip, so it could be suppressed. Additionally the "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" entry for HKEY_CURRENT_USER is redundant, as the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entry overwrites user-specific settings.
    By the way, autorun for all drive types _except_ CD/DVD drives is also disabled by KB971029, listed in the table too. So if you want autorun only disabled for USB and other drives, but not for CD/DVD, just omit above registry file and you get a system with the MS suggested autorun settings automatically.
  • KB970430 and KB971737 (Extended Protection for Authentication): Please mention that for these updates the same registry entries as for KB968389 (in table 2) are necessary! If they're not present, these updates are meaningless and have no effect.
That's it for now, I'll come back if I find more issues :rolleyes:

Kind regards,
Tomalak

With regards to UPHClean-Setup.msi... On your table 3, shouldn't the folder be HFSVCPACK_SW1 not HFGUIRUNONCE?

I don't use it. I found that info on the list from tommyp which is now maintained by MH.

Regards, Mimo

So, can someone cofirm the following: http://www.msfn.org/...amp;hl=uphclean

Found it. HFSLIP changelog:

UPHClean-Setup.msi is no longer automatically moved from HF into HFSVCPACK_SW1 (XP/2K3) or HFGUIRUNONCE (2K)

Also can you add a check when uphclean-setup-x86-2-0-48.msi is present to ignore if UPHClean-Setup.msi is missing??

So far I would prefer that you use your INI to copy&paste the line from the hfslipfc.cmd (containing UPHClean-Setup.msi) to the INI and replace the O by a R (to make it obsolete). Than you add a new line containing uphclean-setup-x86-2-0-48.msi (all in the WIN-section).

Regards, Mimo

I see now that version 2.0.49 of uphclean is also uphclean-setup.msi. So there is no need to change anything.

hi Mim0! just a few observations after running the latest hfslipfc:

despite this HFWindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe, this shows:
wrong (S): HFWindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (Service Pack 3 for Windows XP)

tried it with the following settings (in 4 runs), all with the same results:
SP= (to have it auto-detected instead)

SP=3

SP=
LANG=ENU
LANG2=EN-US

(to have it auto-detected instead & language set)

2.0.49 (beta) filename is uphclean-setup.msi (notice that capitalization difference ... but i guess it doesn't matter :whistle: ) --- released 103108

Thx for you comment. I appreciate it!!
I'm sorry but I do not fully agree, these contents are not all mandatory. So here are some remarks from my side regarding table 2 (security updates):
The meaning of my statement was that table 2 should be taken completely (regarding installed components) if you want to get all security updates and recommendations what should be in everybody sense. Of course, table 2 has to be correct.
1.First of all, I think it makes not much sense to list updates for components that are by default not installed. In this case they should have a note explaining that they're usually not useful or necessary. This applies at least to the following entries:
That's critical. When you install a not-default-component later, this component has to include also the latest security updates. Otherwise you will install an older/unsecure version. In addition it's no disadvantage if you actualize files that already exist on the installation media.
MS09-023 (Windows Search 4.0): Windows Search 4.0 is not part of a standard Win XP SP3. You do not even have it in the list of optional updates...
THX! Removed!!!

THX! Now only for WMP9!!!
MS09-053 (FTP for IIS): IIS is not installed by default. Including this update does not hurt, but it is also not absolutely required.
IMHO to have all dlls (here the ftpsvc2.dll) with the latest sec updates is the most safest way.
MS09-066 (Active Directory): The same. ADAM is only present in the system if manually downloaded and installed by a user (which is by the way possible only for XP Professional, not XP Home), so listing this update is questionable.
Yes. It's also a question for me. This Update installs the Adamdsa.dll 1.1.3790.4569. I think it can stay in the list.
M08-069 (XML Core Services): While MSXML3 and MSXML6 are part of Win XP SP3, MSXML4 (SP3) is not! It is only present in the system if intentionally installed by the user. Of course, if no app will use MSXML4 it's not needed on the system. But I think it's good to have the latest version of MSXML4 instead of getting an older together with an installation (Installers normally do not install older dlls - hopefully :) ).
2.KB955759 (Indeo Codec advisory) is strongly recommended but not mandatory. Therefore it is more of optional character than a definitive must, although mentioning it in table 2 is still appropriate I guess.
That's also my opinion.

This updates will contains the msadce.dll which already exists in Windows XP SP3. msadce.dll will updated from 2.81.1132.0 to 2.81.3002.0.
2.KB967715 (Autorun update): The registry file linked here and provided by Mupper Hunter is over-perfect. Everybody has to decide about the coverage of autorun. I prefer also deactivate all (remember the Sony Rootkit). But probably I'm a little bit paranoid :D
3.KB970430 and KB971737 (Extended Protection for Authentication): Please mention that for these updates the same registry entries as for KB968389 (in table 2) are necessary! If they're not present, these updates are meaningless and have no effect.
THX! Furthermore KB970430 and KB971737 needs the installed KB968389, not just the registry keys (what patch-info.de is writing). I've made hints to KB970430 and KB971737.

hi Mim0! did a run using the latest hfslipfc-100104 & here are some observations:
SP3 id is still prevalent (as in my prev post)

despite these:

Check missing updates for Windows XP SP3:

i've just added 951618-v2 but it says i don't have it ... did a 2nd run but still the same

also, i noticed that you've removed tables 8 (Resources of update information) & 9 (Reported missing updates)

cheers!

Check missing updates for Windows XP SP3:
-----------------------------------------
missing (O): HFGUIRUNONCE UPHClean-Setup.msi (User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
1.6d)
...

So far the only problem is when the filename is not UPHClean-Setup.msi (you're right, capitalization difference doesn't matter). I'll make a hint to the table 3.

in case you'd like to consider (just like what Geej pointed out), for some who used to do it another way, both wmp11 & directx may be extracted instead ... below are the paths & filenames when extracted:
...

I have not really an idea how to check it automatically w/o writing a lot of code. But I think, when someone is using the extracted files she/he knows whats going on. But I will think about a solution.

Check for wrong, obsolete and unknown updates:
----------------------------------------------
unknown: HFSVCPACKdrive_autorun.reg --- for KB967715
unknown: HFSVCPACKWindowsXP_KB968389_x86.reg

The next release contains it and also checking dependencies of KB970430 and KB971737 to KB968389.

lastly, table 9 still has KB909520 but has already been added to table 3.

I removed table 9. :D Reporting missing updates make less sense because table 3 now contains more updates that my installation contains.

despite these:
\HF\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe
\HF\WindowsXP-KB951618-v2-x86-ENU.exe
, these show:

Check for wrong, obsolete and unknown updates:
----------------------------------------------
wrong (S): HF\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (Service Pack 3 for Windows XP)
unknown: HF\WindowsXP-KB951618-v2-x86-ENU.exe

Check missing updates for Windows XP SP3:
-----------------------------------------
missing (O): WindowsXP-KB951618-v2-x86-ENU.exe (Fix incompatibility with OneKey
Recovery software)

Oh, I've forgotten to define the path of KB951618. :blushing: THX!!! :)

Bye, Mimo

THX, Mimo

it should work with polish. You have to define the language in the hfslipfc.ini.

Are all updates reported as missing or just a specific one?

New version:

- Added: Checking if the WMP11 is extracted in HF\WMP11\
- Added: Checking dependencies of KB970430 and KB971737 (they need KB968389)
- Added: WindowsXP-KB968389-x86.reg and WindowsXP-KB967715-x86.reg
- Fixed: check for SP3 (KB936929) works now
- Fixed: path of KB951618 was missing

For checking if the WMP11 is already extracted I'm looking for the wmfdist11.exe in HF\WMP11. I think that's enough (and compatible for tommyp :) ).

- Added: Checking files of already extracted DX9-Update
- Added: Using hfslip to get the language from SOURCE, so normally "lang" (in INI) can always be empty.
- Added: Obsolete entry "lang2" in the INI (lang2 removed from INI, old INI can still be used)

Thx for reporting this. It seems that KB905474 is available only in English. See here.
Regarding this I would say I have define this independent from the language in the file-checker.

But you have a Hungarian version. Where did you get this?

You can get other languages of this update by downloading it via WU and searching for its adress in WindowsUpdate.log.

hi Mim0! just tried hfslipfc-100106 ... (i beg your pardon for the lengthy post) presenting here some scenarios that might require clarification:
(1) running hfslipfc.cmd without SOURCE
check for lang used to be ok in earlier vers even without SOURCE (i normally copy new SOURCE to the HFSLIP dir after running hfslipfc) ...

with these settings:
SP=
LANG=

i got this:

cursor just blinks after 2nd FINDSTR: (marked it with _)...
this instruction does not come up: Press any key to continue . . .

after which, all relevant files in HF & HFSVCPACK_SW1 are identified as unknown ... samples provided below:

won't the extar spaces have something to do with this?

(2) running hfslipfc.cmd with SOURCE (sp2)

no FINDSTR: Cannot open SOURCE\I386\PRODSPEC.INI (but with SP level manually set), these came out:
Checking existing updates for wrong, obsolete or unknown:---------------------------------------------------------wrong (S): HF\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (Service Pack 3 for Windows XP)Check missing updates for WMP11:--------------------------------missing (O): HF\windowsmedia11-kb944882-x8 6-intl.exe (Fix: Memory increases for each media file transfer )

need clarification on the following:
is SOURCE a pre-requisite prior to running hfslipfc.cmd for the purpose of SP3 integration or as expressed in the change log --- for the need to read PRODSPEC.ini, specifically the Localization portion?

how about checking for presence of any of the tags: win51ip.SP1, win51ip.SP2, win51ip.SP3 instead of SP level portion in hfslipfc.ini or PRODSPEC.ini? i may be incorrect but i checked xp gold cd as well as xp cds with sp1, sp2 & sp3 integrated & they all just show this same info:
Product=Windows XP Professional

Version=5.0
Localization=English
ServicePackNumber=0
BitVersion=40

for the purpose of hfslipfc.cmd & hfslipfc.ini, is presence of WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe still required if SOURCE already has SP3 slipstreamed?

in the midst of all these, these items perhaps need remedy:
HF\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (Service Pack 3 for Windows XP)
HF\windowsmedia11-kb944882-x8 6-intl.exe (Fix: Memory increase
s for each media file transfer )

improper identification of language (or absence of its prerequisites) results to files being tagged as unknown, missing, or wrong

i suppose answers to some queries presented here are obvious, but it'd be good to know for clarification purposes.
your work is appreciated Mim0. :thumbup
cheers!

kb944882 is easely fixed. just remove the space from this line (between x8 and 6-intl)

- Added: KB944043 (v3)
- Added: IE6-Prefix-handling (for users who mark the IE6-updates with a "IE6-"-prefix)

thanks Glowy ... exactly what i posted. ;) i'm certain Mim0 would have already adjusted that by this current attachment.

that was quick Mim0! appreciate this. :) i'll run it now & report back.
cheers!

reporting back Mim0 ...
tried 3 quick runs ... with & without SOURCE, leaving default values for both SP= & LANG= while 1 with set value for SP in hfslipfc.ini

1st run (with SOURCE), i got these:
------------------------------------------File-Checker (Build 2010/01/07) for HFSLIPSee following site for further details:people.freenet.de/MisterMoster/hfslip.htm------------------------------------------File Not FoundFINDSTR: Cannot open WORK\GETLCIDD.TXTCheck missing updates for Windows XP SP3:-----------------------------------------missing (O): HF\WindowsXP-KB944043-v3-x86-ENU.exe (Windows Server 2008 read-only domain controller compatibility pack)
i got File Not Found warning ... as for the 2nd 1 about WindowsXP-KB944043-v3-x86-ENU.exe, i don't think this is in the current list. i suppose you'd put it up there when you update the tables. ;) i have just downloaded the file & will run your tool with it in HF

2nd run (without SOURCE ... i just removed the tags for testing purposes), it turned out well but still with the KB944043-v3 prompt

3rd run (with SOURCE & manually set SP=3) , this, together with + KB944043-v3 prompt, came back:
Checking existing updates for wrong, obsolete or unknown:---------------------------------------------------------wrong (S): HF\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (Service Pack 3 for Windows XP)

That's already the way how I check the SP-level :)

hope you don't mind if i ask --- what is the portion of manual setting SP level for in hfslipfc.ini? wouldn't this be the source for identifying SP as wrong, say cdtag is different from what was manually set?

your thoughts ...
thanks!

The current list with KB944043 included is not online yet. that's the reason to download the current hfslipfc here :)

SOURCE may be empty when you run hfslipfc.

Regarding KB936929-message (SP3):
  • If hfslipfc shall run with the information that SP3 is included in SOURCE then KB936929 may not be included in HF (otherwise it's coming up with the wrong-message).
  • If hfslipfc shall run with the information that SP3 is NOT included than KB936929 will be expected.
Seems to be OK

hey Mim0! thanks for the immediate reply ...

these were the 2 lines pertaining to the warning:
File Not Found
FINDSTR: Cannot open WORK\GETLCIDD.TXT

was this for WindowsXP-KB944043-v3-x86-ENU.exe? this particular error hasn't come up in recent runs though

as for WindowsXP-KB944043-v3-x86-ENU.exe, i knew that was a new addition to the list ... already have it & just waiting for the result of the latest run for posting ... ok, no error posted this time

presenting some runs concerning WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe:

here are different scenarios i tried:
(1) SP= , SOURCE with SP2 integrated (win51ip.SP2) ---> no error
(2) SP=3, SOURCE with SP2 integrated (win51ip.SP2) --->
Checking existing updates for wrong, obsolete or unknown:
---------------------------------------------------------
wrong (S): HF\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (Service Pack 3 for Windows XP)

(3) SP= , no SOURCE ---> no error
(4) SP=3, no SOURCE --->
Checking existing updates for wrong, obsolete or unknown:
---------------------------------------------------------
wrong (S): HF\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (Service Pack 3 for Windows XP)

(5) SP= , SOURCE with SP3 integrated (win51p.SP3) --->
Checking existing updates for wrong, obsolete or unknown:
---------------------------------------------------------
wrong (S): HF\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (Service Pack 3 for Windows XP)

(6) SP=3, SOURCE with SP3 integrated (win51p.SP3) ---> this one was strange (& confusing) ... i was expecting, there'd be no error here (since both conditions of SP3 are the same) but then again, here's the result:
Checking existing updates for wrong, obsolete or unknown:
---------------------------------------------------------
wrong (S): HF\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (Service Pack 3 for Windows XP)

indeed, i have WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe in HF which i think is only being identified as wrong if manually assigned SP=3 while SOURCE doesn't have what is expected: win51ip.SP3 cd tag ... which brings me back to the conflict between having manually assigned values for SP= in hfslipfc.ini vs hfslipfc.cmd checking on SOURCE's cd tag (win51ip.SPx) ... say for some reason a user unintentionally assigned value to SP= in hfslipfc.ini which is different with the SP level of SOURCE, then the error comes up ... hehe! i'm not trying to make this difficult for you Mim0 ... just running tests & suggesting since atm, i think the value of SP= in hfslipfc.ini must be the same with cd tag (win51ip.SPx) in SOURCE :P

cheers!
