PC mouse

Good morning,

To get started I am using a Compaq Presario AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3300+, 2411MHz/1.93 GBs RAM, running Windows Xp Home, SP3., with IE8 installed. I utilize Comodo for my firewall and Avast as my anti-virus program.

I have just ordered a Microsoft Wireless Laser 5000 Mouse to replace a Micro Innovations Wireless Laser mouse which didn't appreciate the way I dropped it on a cement floor. That mouse served me well for more than 2 years.

I am currently using an old Microsoft Corded Intellipoint Optical Mouse which I had a few years back.

The reason for this post is because I tried installing a Logitech LX8 Wireless Laser Mouse a few days back and couldn't pull it off. My computer wouldn't recognize it. No Installation disk came with it so I returned it. That is the main reason I have ordered the M/S Wireless Laser 5000 mouse because an installation disk comes with it.

Now for my question which will most likely seem silly for most of you but I have googled it and I still haven't found what I consider an easy to understand answer.

When I receive my new mouse, which hopefully will be tomorrow, what is the correct way to install it? I know it will have instructions with it, but my main concern is what do I do with the old mouse before installing the new one. In other words do I delete it via Device manager before installing the new one or let it alone until after I install the new one and then delete it?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated by this 67-year-old 'frustrated' mouse notice!

Thanks and regards,

You shouldn't have any problem.

The XP should recognize the new device as mouse and either use the old driver (if compatible) or use the "default" one, both should allow "basic" mouse working (maybe some fine-tuning settings won't be available), as well as additional buttons and in some cases the mouse wheel, but moving the mouse and left and right clicking should work allright.

Then you can install the "new" specialistic driver for your new mouse.

Hi jaclaz,

I hope I do not try your patience with these additional questions but I want to make sure I understand you correctly.

Are you saying you feel it is okay to let my current mouse connected before I insert the Installation disk for the new mouse and proceed with the installation and then remove the old mouse from Device Manager after the new one is completely installed and working?

Thanks and regards,

Actually, what I suggested was rather the opposite.

  1. Leave device manager alone.
  2. Close windows/switch the PC off.
  3. Disconnect the old mouse.
  4. Connect the new mouse.
  5. Switch PC on.
  6. Let XP do whatever it thinks fit detecting the new device.
  7. As said most probably the mouse will work allright.
  8. Then you update the driver.

Any USB device has a VID (Vendor ID) and a PID (product ID) but they also belong to a given "class", which is the same for all USB mice.

It is possible that the previous "specific" Micro Innovations driver did not "like" the Logitech VID/PID, though it's strange.

If the above does not work with the MS mouse too, the alternative is:

  1. Open device manager.
  2. Remove the mouse device (don't worry you won't lose instantly mouse control)
  3. Close windows/switch the PC off.
  4. Disconnect the old mouse.
  5. Connect the new mouse.
  6. Switch PC on.
  7. Let XP do whatever it thinks fit detecting the new device.
  8. As said most probably the mouse will work allright.
  9. Then you update the driver.

Now that sounds like a plan to me.

That's the important thing, to have a plan, but time and patrience will be needed too  :

“To achieve great things, two things are needed; a plan, and not quite enough time.”
Thanks again and have a great day!

You are welcome. :)

Being around 9 PM here right now, I'll have a great night instead, if you don't mind ;)
