Slinkie
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,I ask here because of the great WinXP SP2 knowledge that is present. This is perhaps not the correct place but I don't know what to call myquestion. So after being angry perhaps someone will answer ordirect my offending corpus delicti to someplace more appropriate. But first I must explain because I don't know a name to give it:When I use my web browser (it does not seem to matter which browser)to call up a website (does not seem to matter which website) then certainports and IP addresses will be in use. I see this by using DTaskManager. When I am finished and I close the browser the web addresses correspondingto the website and also the ports remain open for about 1 minute. I would like for those to close sooner, perhaps in only a few seconds oreven immediately. So, now this is the question:Is there a setting in the registry that I can change to make the ports andaddresses or lingering connections release sooner after I close the browser?I apologize if I offend for being in the wrong place but I am lost. Many thanks and I will let you know if your help solves the question.Slinkie
johnhc
Slinkie, I think you are not in the correct forum, but I am curious. Why are you not running SP3? Are you using nLite (please attach (not paste) your Last Session.ini) or have you customized your XP? I found this MS article, which may not apply to you but may if you are using the Favorites menu heavily. It provides a hot fix you could try. Sorry, I cannot even suggest a forum of experts. Have you tried a trace like Wireshark (free)? Good luck, John.
Slinkie
Slinkie, I think you are not in the correct forum, but I am curious. Thanks, John, I will check that. Well, I am not using SP3 because I'm not using it.SP2 is the platform I'm working with. It could be Win95, Win98 or any other butI'm using XP Pro SP2. I have used Nlite before but in this case I've done thingsmanually. I want to stop the networking sooner because I can't delete COOKIES,HISTORY, INDEX.DAT... all those things that leave traces... until the connections stop.Yes, normally a program to do so and a reboot would be needed. I can make ithappen in real-time, almost, if those things clear sooner. All beyond the scopeof nlite. But thank you for your sugestion. I would not be at all offended if youkilled my posts on this.v/rSlinkie
johnhc
Slinkie, you are welcome. I doubt the hot fix will help, but it is worth a try. I can't kill anything for I am just a poster as yourself. There are a lot of very smart people here and someone else may comment. Enjoy, John.
