Windows 98SE - uTorrent 1.8.4 Build 16688 Question

Just a quick question about Windows 98SE and uTorrent. In the "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE" list uTorrent is not currently listed in the"File Sharing and File Downloaders" section. I myself like uTorrent ... currently using version 1.8.4 Build 16688, which works great with Win 98SE. I thought I read in a MSFN posting somewhere that some people were saying that the next version (1.8.5 Build 17414) had some conflicts with Win 98SE. Can someone verify that this might be true. At the web site they are still listing Win 98 as working with uTorrent.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What are µTorrent's system requirements?

Very low. It works on as weak a system as Windows 95 on a 486 with 14MiB of RAM (with the Winsock2 update), up to 2003 and Vista. It also works on 64-bit Windows.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can anyone verify that the new numbered version ... uTorrent 2.0.0 RC4 still works with Win 98SE. That's a pretty big jump from version 1.8.5 to 2.0.0 ... FileHippo is still saying "Windows (All Versions)" with this new 2.0.0 version.

thanks ...

*** This is the current listing in the "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE" list of "File Sharing and File Downloaders". No uTorrent versions listed at all.

uTorrent and BitTorrent are practicaly the same things. I tried first to instal uTorrent on w98 and it failed. I installed BitTorrent 6.3 and it works perfectly with, I think, the same fonctionalities.

Sorry but I couldn't agree with you. Yes, both are BT clients but IMHO, BitTorrent (I've used it in the past) is some sort of bloatware compared to uTorrent.

Duffy98, as to the your question: I have 1.8.5 version and it works but I'm using KernelEx 4.0 Final 2.

I've installed also version 2.0 RC4 but I don't know how it works - I haven't tested it yet.

Fredledingue, rainyd ...

Thanks for the information. I really like uTorrent, just surprised it wasn't in the list of File Sharing software. I may try the 1.8.5 version down the road. Thanks ...

The original BitTorrent was written in Python and was bloated. They bought out uTorrent and so BitTorrent 6.0 (and newer) are simply a rebranded uTorrent client.

There was the official "Bittorrent" bittorrent client. Then there were others that created their own clients (Like there are many other web browsers out there).

Bittorrent was the official bittorrent client, but it did not allow certain things like selective downloads (You must download the whole torrent, and not only certain files). It was also not the smallest and most efficient client available.

utorrent is, by far, the smallest bittorrent client which I've ever used and seen. But I can't get any version of utorrent above 1.77 to work properly on my Windows 98SE box (HTTP trackers will get "hostname not found" errors).

BitTorrent 6.3 may look bloated due to its 3 Mb instaler. However if you install it without the garbage (some search bars and so on) it installs only the executable which is 600 Kb and an uninstall file which is 400 Kb.

When I run it, it takes practicaly no resource.

v 6.3 allows selected file download.

I'm very happy with BitTorrent 6.3 but if you want to play with uTorrent and KernelX, it's up to you.

Do NOT use uTorrent. Regardless of your OS.

uTorrent has a buggy upload manager. It fails to upload to other clients. Presence of uTorrent clients in a tracker usually result in the torrent being much harder to download. The increasing proliferation of uTorrent clients is killing the BitTorrent network.

For torrents I usually use BitTransmission on Linux. Keeping a Linux box or dual-boot especially for your torrents is worth the effort. I've personally observed significant performance differences with the same torrent files.

If a second OS is not your thing, try FDM. It has torrent support, isn't too big, and works decently well.

I'm almost willing to post that observation to the uTorrent user forum to test for responses.

But my flame suit is at the cleaners right now...

Thanks for all the info on the torrents. For now, uTorrent v1.8.4 Build 16688 works great for me on Win 98SE. I just wasn't sure about going to a higher version with Win 98SE. I haven't run into any problems with that version of uTorrent on my machines as of this posting.

sp193, that's too bad you can't get a higher version to work over 1.7.7 ... maybe try the 1.8.4 version again, works fine for me, with or without KernelEx installed. Maybe it will work for you.

I would be also surprised that the top #1 torrent client had such huge issue unfixed by now...

Haven't used any of this stuff, but ... what about version 7.2?

The reviews at http://download.cnet.com/BitTorrent/3000-2196_4-10211384.html say there was a large speed improvement with version 7.1, and the system requirements at http://www.bittorrent.com/btusers/guides/bittorrent-user-manual/chapter-01-introduction-bittorrent-mainline/system-requirement (note, seem to have been written at version 6.1.2 build 13185) says that even W95 is OK.

Joe.

i'm also using uTorrent 2.0.4 (build 22150) on my win98SE system, and so far i find no problem with it, download & seeding works just fine,

however i already installed KernelEx beforehand.

The version I tried was uTorrent 2.2.1 Beta 23984 with KernelEx and kept getting a crash.
