Hi guys and girls :hello:

I am going quitely...sorry....very loudly insane here!

I installed windows 7 on C: drive and then Ubuntu. I let Ubuntu install grub to mbr and was going to live with that---but my customer would like to see windows controlling boot order....simple I said ....done it least a hundred times before.......nada!!

I booted from windows 7 and then chose command prompt for my repair of mbr.

I then ran the following code which I have seen on a hundred theads:

X:\Sources bootsext.exe /fixmbr

I get information thrown at me about different usage of bootect.exe but no repair of mbr?

Does anyone have any idea why? I have dualbooted a hundred differnt cominations and never had problems reinstating mbr before.

Hi jaclaz :thumbup

How are you mate? Look some threads were quite good in mentioning that you must go to boot directory....

The following länk is the best I found and solve my dilemma....

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20864...oot-record.html

But logic says that I should have looked on the dvd....!!!! I am going senile....LOL

I do appreciate your quick reply and I am sorry the brain cells have been on recharge ....my charger not working....LOL Thanks for your info as usual brilliant!

Anyway, all is well with the world again.

Yep, the NEW Windows 7 bootsect.exe, UNLIKE the Vista one, can "touch" the MBR, but with the /mbr switch, NOT with the OLD (Longhorn) /fixmbr

Though I wonder why there is this:

NOTE: If this method fails to restore the MBR, you can try the bootrec command as it is also a tool for repairing the MBR.

Last time I checked computer worked with binary, things are either 0 or 1, On or Off, work or don't work.....

Should it be not clear, IN VISTA:

Bootsect.exe Modifies the Bootsector Not the MBR!!

http://neosmart.net/blog/2007/bootsectexe-...or-not-the-mbr/

VISTA:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library...177(WS.10).aspx

Bootsect Command-Line Options

Bootsect.exe updates the master boot code for hard disk partitions to switch between BOOTMGR and NTLDR. You can use this tool to restore the boot sector on your computer. This tool replaces FixFAT and FixNTFS.

WINDOWS 7:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library...577(WS.10).aspx

Bootsect Command-Line Options

Bootsect.exe updates the master boot code for hard disk partitions to switch between Bootmgr and NT Loader (NTLDR). You can use this tool to restore the boot sector on your computer. This tool replaces FixFAT and FixNTFS.

BUT:

/mbr

Updates the master boot record without changing the partition table on sector 0 of the disk that contains the partition specified by SYS, ALL, or <drive letter>. When used with the /nt52 option, the master boot record is compatible with operating systems older than Windows Vista. When used with the /nt60 option, the master boot record is compatible with Windows® 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server® 2008 or Windows Server® 2008 R2.

A very good example of how things are properly documented and changes are clearly highlighted.

I do appreciate your quick reply and I am sorry the brain cells have been on recharge ....my charger not working....LOL

There may be a way out in the future ;):

Hi MrJinje :hello:

I know where you are going with this....I will mark this thread as solved.

BTW

I followed this thread

I then followed there advice and worked my to my boot sector on the windows dvd and ran the following:

bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr

Now it works like a dream again!
