I have been taking a look to your method to see whether it could be adaptable to SNMsynth. I'm surprised you install .NET 3.0 SP2 not modifying it apparently, I suppose you have patched also vs_setup.msi but still don't know how. I don't know what the update from patch folder does appart from copying patched dlls where all magic seems to reside (that's beyond my habilities). I also understand KDW is used on EZ mode for not replacing system files but running KDW only to execute .NET 3.5 SP1 applications.

Your solution is obviously a totally different approach, and don't know if it could get to be highly effective; so don't know it would worth it, but I think it may fit with SNMsynth and want to know what do you think about it.

Hi,strel.

I have looked SNMsynth at first time.

My .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 for Win2000 Installer mechanizm based on that .NET 3.0 SP2 Installer and .NET 3.5 Installer can install without modify with correct order.
I used no patched vs_setup.msi for installation .NET 3.5 SP1.
After install them, update.exe I hacked patches for Windows 2000.
And I packed them IExpress Installer :)

I apologize for this question, but what programs/applications/services utilize or require the .NET framework? I've just started updating my laptop w/ win2k sp4 which I haven't used since April 2007. It doesn't have any versions of .NET on it per Add/Remove programs.

I've only run into one program which stated a requirement for .NET & I think that was Nero 9.

Thanks Roman,
I have a better idea what kinds of programs utilize the .net framework. MS installed several versions of .net on my winxp computers via automatic updates, but I couldn't figure out what .net did. All my google hits were directed towards web developers - not program developers - and the articles were all over my head.

I added to the List some applications.
Many XNA and SlimDX games work on Windows 2000. :)

I followed these instructions, and seemed to get the framework installed fine. My problem is the framework includes WPF, as you pointed out, but what all else needs to be installed for WPF specifically? I am missing something just following these steps because my application is still returning Presentation Framework errors, specifically system.windows.markup.xamlparse.

Is there a specific set of requirements or steps I can follow for .net 3.0/3.5 for a WPF application?

Hi Rollie.

Of course, .NET Framework 3.5SP1 for Windows 2000 includes also WPF.
I wrote in myblog how to run .NET Framework 3.x applications on Windows 2000.
It may need You use KDW kernel32 in Ez install mode and check with Ez KD registry.
Some application requires also user32 wrapper.

I checked some applications work on Windows 2000.
But there are any applications which doesn't work.

If you hava WPF applications which you would not run. I try to run them.

Hi!
This looks like a great idea, but it doesn't work properly; when I try to install Paint.NET, the installer extracts the neccesary installation files, but the actual installation program never starts.

I run the installer, wich begins to extract neccesary installation files. It finishes, and then nothing happends. Oh well, not really nothing, I see a flash on the screen wich might be the installation program, but nothing happends.
When I installed .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 I was told to install another update wich would improve compatibility, but I didn't do that. Could that be the cause of my problem? I also have the Swedish version on Windows 2000, while your version of .NET is in English/Japanese. Can I use Microsofts standard language pack for language support?
EDIT: I checked the temp directory, and the PdnSetup folder was empty, even though the installer clearly extracted files to it.

Hi Svenne.

I think that it is not necessarily .Net Framework 3.x Swedish version support.
Of course you can install swedish language package with a little change it.

You can check the following way as .Net Framework 3.x was installed on your computer.

* open 'my computer'.
* input address bar 'c:\winnt\assembly' (or c:\windows\assemblu)
* sort with version.
* look at version column.
* If exist each other about 30 components ,PresentationCore and Windows.Base , .etc in version 3.0.0.0 and version 3.5.0.0, you successed to install .Net framework 3.5 for Windows 2000 on your computer.

Extracted the files manually with 7-zip, and tried to run the file PaintDotNet.msi in the folder $_OUTDIR. It resulted in this error message:
Attached File  error2.png (1.66K)
Number of downloads: 2
Translated to english:

I gave up on 3.5.5 and reverted back to 2.72, but when I ran the installer I got this:
Attached File  error3.png (3.4K)
Number of downloads: 8
I've EZ Installed kernel32 to the specified directory, but it still doesn't work.
Could you please translate the PDN installation guide to English?

I looked at install Paint.Net 3.5.5 installer.
It was made with VS2010, and fail to install.

You had better try to install 3.5.4.
I'll seek how to install 3.5.5.

IT STILL DOES NOT SUPPORT FULLY WPF FUNCTIONALITY!!!

Hi There,

I installed NetFx35W2KRC3.exe on Win2K without any error. Used EZ, and I was able to make my WPF app to come up. However, all the images I used for my app could not be shown. (They were in resource/xaml). Another problem is that when I closed the app, it disappeared, but checked again Task Manager, the process was still there.

This issue applies to any WPF application which use images.

I tried to unpack NetFx35W2KRC3.exe, and install separated components step-by-step to find out the reason. There only thing failed was Windows Imaging Component 3.0 (WIC). In the Japanese version, it says some error which I could not read. I used the equiv. English version and it tells you to not support the OS version you have.

Checked again the setup .inf,

[Version]
Signature="$Windows NT$"

[DefaultBranchesServicePacks.WinNt51]
0=WinXP

[DefaultBranchesServicePacks.WinNt52]
0=Srv2k3

---> This is what I added to hack to no avail though!!!!
[DefaultBranchesServicePacks.WinNt50]
0=WinXP

[SourceInfsBranches]
WinXP=update\update_WinXP.inf
Srv2k3=update\update_srv2k3.inf

I would very much appreciate anyone knows the work around?

Thanks

Putting Windows Imaging Component WMI on windows 2000.

I am trying to install dot net 4 onto 2k. i got errors about proceedures in ntdll and advapi32 (if you get further) if i run setup, so i decided to run the MSI and it wants WIC. so i had to find a way to get it on.
yes yours is good for the error "could not find the update.inf file needed to update your system". before you click OK, look in each of your drives for a new zany long hex folder name with an "update" subfolder. copy that stuff elsewhere (the one file in use is not necessary). then after the above modification you got the error "the version of windows you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install" i used openedfilesview, which told me where the log file is, c:\winnt\WIC.log. and gives me: time: CheckSystem: Minor Version mismatch:STATUS_NT_VERSION_MISMATCH, time: DoInstallation: CheckSystem Failed: 0xf021. this text appears in the exe. hmm. needs cracking.

so for my second cracked program, (unfortunately i dont know anymore how to save in ollydbg, as i hardly do it, all the instructions on the net have a convient "Right click> save modifications> all modifications" but for me what is remotely like it is right click on each your modified lines, edit, then choose copy to executable, but then once i save its corrupt... v2.01alpha2) so i will tell you the steps to crack it and you can save it if you can, or just run it.

step 1
search for lines 102ec81, 102ecbd and 102ecc1 (choose, right click, edit, fill these with nops, especailly the first)
now it will give an error lines: time: DoInstallation: CheckSystem Failed: 0xf001, time: Setup cannot update your Windows 2000 files because the language installed on your system is different from the update language.

step2
search for line 105450f and right click, assemble, and change JE to JMP

and it will run (you will need to shift click the run button). enjoy.
