Device Manager--no list appears

Recently got a new Acer laptop running Win 7 Home Premium and have kept it updated.Got a new scanner last week and cannot install it so it runs.Have used disc provided and made a download from Canon website (it is a Canon lite 100).Still no joy so looked in device manager but no list of anything at all, just a blank window apart from 'Device Manager' title. Would welcome advice on both problems but particularly on how to get a list up on device manager.

Thanks.

I've never heard of an mmc going blank before; maybe it's still loading.

Disconnect your scanner to see if that is what is causing the hanging.

Also check your cpu usage when you open device manager.

BTW another way you can see device info is msinfo32 - just type that into the StartMenu.

I had this problem on an XP machine. I searched for it and it turned out that a particular service what not running. Look into your services. I searched for services for XP which should be running by default to configure the services.

Maybe you can find default services for Win 7 and reconcile those for you machine.

Thanks for your reply--no better with scanner disconnected.Still have to check cpu usage when I open device manager--still learning how to do these sort of bits.Like the msinfo32 tip, looks as good as device manager to me but suspect I will find that I cannot alter things in msinfo32,only in device manager.Still no info in that window so going to explore the second reply I got. Will get back to you later. Cheers

Well in XP if you disabled the Plug and Play or Event Log service it would do that. In Windows 7 though you cannot disable the Plug and Play service, and disabling the Windows Even Log doesnt do that anymore.

Thanks Digerati--haven't got any further by trying to change anything in 'Services' but still trying.Have been at work today, same tomorrow but home on Friday so will have another go.Failing that will email Microsoft and see if they have any clues. After that will try Canon to see what they say about driver for new scanner for Windows 7. They must have an answer, even MS says on one of their help pages that it should work.

Cheers for now.
