Hi group,
I have a Seagate serial ATA hard disk and an Asus A78NX Deluxe mobo. I was curious the other day about what transfer rate I was getting from the 80Gb drive so I ran the "SeaTools Disk Diagnositc" util to find out.
I got an average of 77MB/sec.
Is this about right, or does this seem a bit slow?
Cheers,
Gray

I believe the theoretical limit is 150 MB/s but realistically it will average around 120 MB/s. In looking at the MB specs I didn't see an onboard SATA controller. Are you using a PCI SATA controller card or did I just miss it in the board specs?

The Asus A7N8x Deluxe has a "Silicon ImageŽ Sil 3112A Controller" on board.

Currently, sATA HDs aren't much faster than their ATA-133 counterparts.
So, yes an average of 77MB/sec is extremely good (most SATA HDs don't even give this speed).
For comparison, my ATA-133, 7200rpm HD gives transfer rates of 58 MBps on average (under normal conditions, not the hypocritical "ideal" conditions that most manufacturers state), and that's pretty good in the world of ATA. Yes, your HD is very good in terms of speed and compares favourably with other SATA ones.
If you don't watch out, I may even steal it from you ;-)
