One of the first things I do when I install Windows (any version) is to put a copy of notepad.exe in the sendto folder. The actual location of that folder in Server 2008 r2 is a little squirrely compared to where I usually expect to find it - but I found it.

But for some reason it won't run from that location (but no error is given when I try). But a shortcut to notepad.exe will run correctly. What's going on?

You should be either using shortcuts or registry pointers for the send-to menu. Is notepad a protected program now? On my 2k8 (7server) server, I have to run notepad as admin in order to save anything ANYWHERE. So to say, if I open Notepad from the start menu, I can save something, but if I open a text file, notepad won't let me save. Perhaps they are related.

An example (from pre-Vista) (Documents and Settings/Me/SendTo folder)...
Please note this is info-only (what I have)...

3 items (compressed, desktop, mail) are "directed" (maybe just the Icon indicators?) via the contents of DESKTOP.INI (and I believe the registry as well).

1 item (My Documents) appears to be strictly a registry setting (not in DESKTOP.INI).

2 items are shortcuts.

FWIW, never heard of actually copying the app to the SendTo folder. New one on me...
