I 'm new to emoticons and not up on slang - for any generation, including my own.

What is :w00t: Woot?

What is this guy saying :P?

Are both of these little people confused :blink:, one worse than the other?

Is this a wink ;)? Is this a wince :}?

I came in late to the game and I don't know the score.

:w00t: Woot = think another version of "Whoo Hoo!" or "Yay!"
:P = sticking his tounge out at you
 = this guy is confused to the point his eyes are spinning around.
 = this guy sees something wierd, shocking or surprising. Can also be expressed as a "double-take"
;) = this guy is winking at you, nudge nudge, say no more
:} = This one is not like the ascii symbol. The picture is like a "ho-hum" or "i tried it but it didn't work"

Too many emoticons for one post!

Here's some others.
 = Says phear, but originally was "Ninja" in old IPB versions. He's doing something behind the scenes.
 = this is when you see something you don't get. If you try to figure it out, it may lead to

More generally, the "name" of the emoticon is it's meaning, some are used with difference meanings/intent.

 this is "huh" like in "Huh?"
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/huh
it means that you are perplexed or don't understand what the other is saying

:w00t: this is "w00t", which can mean just like in "WHAAAAT?" that you understand, but that it is clearly absurd in your view, or simply that you are excited at the idea:
http://www.urbandict...e.php?term=woot

 this is "wacko":
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/wacko
it means surprise at a completely unexpected and confusing statement or event

 this is "blink", as in:
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/blink
startled or surprised, but in a minor way than the above

Emoticons are customizable by the board Admin, here on MSFN we have only a few of them, on other boards there may be many, many more, as an example:
http://www.boot-land...&CODE=emoticons

Posted Image "hyper" is the "superlative of "w00t"

Also, the "ph34r/ninja" here on MSFN is "static" while this one is animated:

AFAIK it can mean BOTH "phear" like when you are scared of something, or "ninja" meaning that you are doing something "under the hood".

Thanks to everyone,

This will help me get caught up w/ the rest of the world. The emoticon pages I found on search had sort of different meanings for the same emoticon and didn't give me the context or connotation - more like one word definitions. I've bookmarked the free dictionary.

I've seen people use : + ) to indicate a smile rather than generate an emoticon, but in previewing this reply I see it works as code in a post. I get the emoticon rather than the letters unless I use the code brackets. But then everything else I type ends up in code altho I can see the end code bracket [/code] ahead of the rest of my reply. ????

Does msfn prefer we only use those emoticon provided/actually limit the emoticons allowed in posts in this forum? If I type in a code for one you don't have would it work? But would you prefer I didn't? You've got most of the ones I need - rant, embarrassed, confused, really confused, paranoid, shocked and I really like woot. The only one missing is bowing to a replier's wisdom. Some people might find that offensive, I guess. Thumbs up just isn't enough - it doesn't have the gratitude and awe factor. And an old geezer/old lady one would be nice for when I feel really old.
Some others might like to have the rant emoticon w/ the off lever to give me a gentle hint.

Since I'm new to emoticons I do want to use too many, but I've been holding myself back - until this post. I'll be good now. Well, I plan to be good now.

Well MSFN just has the ones that came with the forum software, and maybe some old leftover ones from previous versions. Some other sites I go to have custom ones too. Before emoticons, people would just type little faces with letters, then when forums became popular they made those faces have actual pictures. The reason why they don't appear in the codebox is because everything in there has no formatting. That way we can post code and not have the board screw it up on us.

There are a ton of other ones, some people do them facing the other way like (:
or O:
or D:
Also there are a bunch of other types like ^_^
or x_x
or o_O
or O_o
or xD

Well where did you think smileys came from? People just wanted to make their emoticons bigger and bigger.

Kel!

I switched off 'Enable animated images' in my Opera Browser and you fell from the sky!

I much prefer something that takes less brain power to operate.
