Did you tried with lastest mplayer (it improve a little and multicore support is better handled)?

I don't update A/V components and codecs individually. It's too much work, and I'm no expert on configuring the pieces to work together properly.

When it's time to reinstall Windows, I install the latest codec pack bundle and forget about it.

VLC Media Player (which I rarely use): Scramled video, Audio ok
Smplayer: Video very slow (about a 75% decrease in speed), audio doesn't work
GOM Player: Video and Audio are present, but it plays slow (about a 50% decrease)
Realplayer: No Support for mkv files

Hi well since its a high def mkv It will make a difference what program you use to play it a net book can play mkv files fine. Vlc and other programs only use the CPU to decode the mkv so you can get poor performance. Where as zoom player power dvd , windows media player classic and others will use the gpu to play it giving much better performance.

Which OS, adrian2055? And was it 32 or 64-bit? You have no problems yet I have better hardware...?

I recently swapped my motherboard to a Gigabyte G31M-ES2L due to the failure of the previous motherboard (listed above). Same components, same OS and software (no reinstall) results in slightly improved performance. Still stutters through audio and video, just not as badly.

@5eraph: it all depends on which codec & player you're using to decode it with. Some drivers break video acceleration too (again, depends on the video card) and such. Which video renderer you use can also change things quite a bit. Some players are just crap too -- VLC is pretty much worthless for mostly everything HD (even when the CPU is not maxed).

Working fine on Win7 x64 with MPC-HC (E2160, Radeon 4670 and also: Athlon X2 4850e, Radeon 3200)

5eraph, I'm running vista ultimate 32-bit retail version with sp2 installed. My motherboard (according to belarc advisor) is a Shuttle Inc FS30V10.

The codecs I have installed are:

AC3Filter 1.63b
Adobe Flash Player (Latest)
Adobe shockwave Player 11.5
CoreAVC Professional Edition 1.8
DivX Codec 7.2 (the free one)
X264 H.264/AVC Video Codec
Xvid 1.2.2

I will add that Media Player Classic Home Cinema is the only player that actually played this file or any other HD files smoothly. My other players (RealPlayer 11, Quicktime, VLC, Gom and SMPlayer) didn't work.
