Video Drivers For Black Screen

Recommended Posts

I'm new here, just registered to try to solve this issue. I appreciate any help I can get. I'm not totally computer savvy, but I do have basic problem solving skills.

Dell XPS 700 with Pentium D 3.00 GHz (EMT64T - 64bit compatible)

Dual Nvidia 7900 GTX cards

2 GB RAM

I've been using XP Home Edition (32 bit) since I bought the computer, but recently decided to upgrade to XP64 for the additional RAM space. I can add another 6GBs to the 2GB I already have. 32 bit windows only recognizes like 3.25 GBs or something and I need the extra power for HD video editing. Anyway, when I went to install XP64, I only got about halfway through the process. On the automatic restart the windows logo came up and I got nothing but a black screen and low-resolution cursor. I couldn't open up task manager or anything. I couldn't do anything. When I tried booting in safe mode I couldn't get past the "windows has not completed installation error". So I'm pretty much forced to restart in standard mode to inevitably get the black screen again. I ended up reinstalling 2 more times before finally breaking and reinstalling XP32 so I could get on the internet and do a search.

I've found a lot of people are having this issue, but I think more with Windows 7 than XP.

I just downloaded the Nvidia drivers for 7900 GTX compatible with WinXP 64 bit, and a new version of Bios, plus I think a 64 bit chipset driver. I put them on my External HD, but I'm not sure how I'm going to install them if I can't even get into windows from the bootup.

Does anyone have advice?

I feel like it has to be my video card...but I really have no idea.

Thanks!

Welcome to MSFN.

You could try nLite http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/89-nlite/ , which will allow you to add service packs, drivers and plenty of other stuff to your CD, as well modify some tweaks to your liking. As for the BIOS update, it usually has to be copied to the root of C:\, and then called from the BIOS itself by means of a flash utility (although I honestly don't believe a BIOS update would help). You can do all this while still in your 32-bit XP. Could you post the link to the BIOS update?

Cheers
