I just noticed that the url suffixes are appearing when I drag them off of a browser. In XP Antispy there is a setting to turn this on and off. It is unresponive and the url shortcut properties no longer shows it as a shortcut. Any help is appreciated.I suspect this has to do with the uninstallation of IE9 preview, the problem is the prior restore points have been lost.

Well the solution turned out to be a quite simple one. I was concentrating on that there was something wrong with the reg value

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut]
"NeverShowExt"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\InternetShortcut]
"NeverShowExt"

Quite by accident I re-associated as the default browser to IE8 and the problem remedied itself. I switched back to Fx and no problems since.
