Dear Forum,

I just had the displeasure of finding out that Hotmail has screwed me

again and now won't let me use my Firefox v2.0.0.14 to write E-Mails, just

read them.

The last time I tried any version over v2.0.0.14, I had a BUNCH of

problems, but now I'm forced to. BUT Mozilla says that their v3.6.8 won't

work on 98SE.

A buddy told me there WAS a way to do it, but I can't find it.

Thank you in advance for any help you can be.

You have to install KernelEx.
It has 2 threads: the main one & KernelEx App Compatibility Database.

KernelEx 4.5 beta 2 is very stable, and allows FF 3.5

KernelEx 4.5 RC1 has still a few bugs but allows FF 3.6 & 4.0 Beta 2

BTW, I use Opera 10.60 (needs KernelEx any version) for Hotmail in Windows 98SE.
Previous version 10.5x run without KernelEx.

1st, thanks for the quick reply. I've been doing some surfing and found

Firefox versions from 3 to 3.6.8 at http://www.oldapps.com/firefox.php

I also scored KernelEx v4.5 RC1 and also Beta 2 from Sourceforge.

What, exactly do I have to do to install the KernelEx, AND which one?

Do I uninstall my v2.0.0.14 before or after I install the KernelEx?

Which Firefox do I then install after I've uninstalled my v2.0.0.14?

Please be as detailed as possible.

As far as Opera goes, I absolutely L-O-V-E my AI Roboform, and it does

not support ANY Opera browsers.

Just run the downloaded installer, it should be exe file. I enable KernelEx for all applications in installation settings. If some application has troubles after KernelEx installing, open the properties of the application file or shortcut, go to the Compatibility tab, and disable KernelEx for it. The installer will install the KernelEx and prompt to reboot. After rebooting you should see the message that KernelEx is successfully installed and functional.

Which version is up to you. Beta 2 seems a bit more stable, however I installed RC1 yesterday and everything seems fine. RC1 supports the latest firefox versions, Beta 2 does not support Firefox 3.6 and later.

It absolutely doesn't matter.

It depends on the KernelEx version you have chosen. If you installed RC1 than install the latest (currently 3.6.8), if you installed Beta 2 install the latest 3.5.*.

According to the message #423, even Kernelex 4.0 Final 2 is fine with Firefox 3.5.7:

craftech did not mention about Flash 10, but he reinstalled Firefox 2 due to printing problem with Firefox 3 in message #427...

I actually think you should remove Firefox 2.x before installing Firefox 3.68. Some of the settings and other stuff from the FF2 user profiles may not migrate cleanly into FF3.

Update: Composing emails from Firefox 2.0.0.20 in Hotmail didn't work on my WinME computer. Blinking cursor does not show up in the Compose email message box. Removed FF2 and installed Firefox 3.6.8 and KernelEx 4.5 RC4 under WinME and Compose dialog box now displays a blinking cursor in the message box.

Bug_zs, it's ultimately the fault of Microsoft changing the Windows Live Hotmail site to work only with recent versions of Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Google Chrome browsers and breaking compatibility with older ones.

So yes, you are "forced" to use newer versions of Firefox on your machine whenever you use Hotmail.
