It's almost time for mr to get a new box, and I was considering a dual CPU... then I saw McSoft doing a free preview of 64-bit XP... has anyone used a 64-bit machine? Pros? Cons? Is it really worth it?
just looking for others' experiences/ opinions... thanks!

it'd be worth it if you were billy boy's nephew.
For the rest, 64-bit has atleast another year before it goes mainstream.

interesting... But what really do they mean by 64-bit chips. I've looked at everything and I just don't get it. What would be the use of that?

basically the chip has alot more registers so it can do more operations.
ive got the ms 64 bit beta but am waiting for some sound drivers before i install it.
about the only increase you would see now was if you do encoding/compression/compiling. once other companies recompile/release software for M$'s 64 bit you'll see even more of a boost.
overall, i love my A64, even running in 32bit.

Look at it this way, would you prefer an 8 bit nintendo, or a 16 bit SNES?
Its the same thing. 64 bit CPU is much faster and can do a lot more operations at the same time, so running 32 bit applications it will do them a whole lot faster than a standard 32 bit equivilent. An Athlon 64 3200 is at least 10% beter than an Athlon 3200 when running 32 bit applications.
Ill be getting an Athlon64 3200 very soon
Cant wait!

FthrJACK, I was watching The Screen Savers the other night and they were saying that it would take Windows a longer time to process the same amount of info with the 64-bit chip, or something along those lines!

The only way to be sure is to try it yourself. Me personally if I wasn't spending all my money on books and tuiton id get a AMD Athlon 64 and run Linux on it. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh thad be sooooo sweet.

Is that true? Do 32-bit apps even recognize they're using a 64-bit chip? I thought I remembered hearing something along the lines of the only progs taht will see a benefit are ones written specifically for 64-bit...

32Bit Oses and Applications cannot take advantage of the addition capabilities of the new 64bit CPUs.
Look at it this way, say you have a dual CPU and on things like Photoshop u notice a decent upshot in performance with your dual CPUs, but certian games and other applications dont seem to run any faster. Thats becasue the game or application is not capable or using the other CPU, it was coded do use single threaded architechture, and simple cannot take advantage of the multiple threaed Hardware you havge come to love.
It is the same way with the 64bit chips.
