500 / 320 gb sata drives not supported?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have an Intel 865 GBF board (Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Prescott) with 2 SATA slots.

I am trying to install 500 GB and/or 320 GB SATA drives, but

the BIOS would not detect neither one.

I heard about SATA 1 mode for this board, so I tried a proper

jumper setting on the drive, but did not work.

Has anyone made either a 320 GB or 500 GB SATA drive work on this board?

Thanks.

I used to use this board, but only had a 160GB as my largest drive. I checked the BIOS release notes and it doesn't appear that any of the updates specifically mention this problem. It shouldn't hurt to update the BIOS anyways, and try changing the SATA setting in the BIOS. IIRC you should have options of Native or Enhanced. Latest BIOS update here:

Hi Tripredacus,

Thanks for your feedback.

I have already the latest BIOS (P25) for this board, and currently,

both the PATA and SATA are enabled in the BIOS.

As far as I can tell, that is the only option related to the SATA

setting in the BIOS.

Maybe, 320/500 GB SATA are not just supported by this board.

Maybe, 320/500 GB SATA are not just supported by this board.

That would sound very "queer". :w00t:

I mean there is not AFAIK a known hard disk size limit in that range of sizes.

The nearest is the 128 Gb LBA28/48 limit, but that applies to the OS and not normally to BIOS.

Notebooks/laptops are prone to have "peculiar" BIOSes, but desktops are unlikely to.

I guess you need to get your hands on a smaller drive and check it works on that MB, it is possible that *something* else is wrongly set or defective.

There is at least a report:

http://www.techenclave.com/storage-solutions/intel-865gbf-motherboard-compatibility-500gb-1tb-150875.html

of 320 Gb acdtually working (but 1 Tb NOT working) on that board, and one definitely saying that 320 Gb does work:

http://www.computing.net/answers/hardware/intel-d865gbf-and-seagate-sata-hdd/48293.html

and here is a report of a 500GB being detected (but working slowly):

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1218331

So right now I would vote for the *something* else....

Hi jaclaz,

Currently, I am using a 200 GB SATA drive without a problem.

As far as the BIOS not detecting 320/500 GB, I am not sure

how I can troubleshoot this issue.

The board is already updated with the latest BIOS and I have

checked the SATA cable connections thoroughly.

Again, I have tried the jumper setting on the drive to be SATA 1,

but nothing seems successful.

The drives cannot be bad or dead as they are new.

Thanks.
