Impressive.

Except for the problem I'm having with my DVD and/or CD-RW drive.

So would it be worth it to switch from XP to 2003 and use it as a workstation? If so, what are the main reasons?

ive been using it as my workstation for a while now, if your happy with xp i would say your wasting your time, but if your getting ready to reformat the comp anyway, and you dont own a legal license for xp then i would definatly install 2k3

of course it's good to use as workstation.
but first, realize what are you chasing: number 2003 insted of 2002 (xp) or greater stability? and what price you are able to pay: many settings, tweaks and adjustments before you can really start using your workstation or just feed it with easily customizable winnt.sif and start playing in 30 minutes.
huh?

I've been using it for a few months now... and I must say, it runs much faster than XP... I definatly recomend the switch.

The only problem I've had, is that it won't recognise my sound card, though I use a USB sound device, so that's not a problem.

Same here. "Much Faster" is probably exaggerated though.

What do you mean? That it doesn't have a built-in driver for your sound card? If so, there is 99.9% chances that an XP-compatible driver will work on W2K3. I have two "pro" soundcards (Yamaha DS2416 and STA DSP24) that run perfectly on W2K3 with the XP drivers.

I used the workstation conversion that is posted on msfn, and found that 2k3 works well for a workstation.

I worked how to directly install Windows 2003 Server as a workstation. I changed a lot of stuff so I am able to create a Windows 2003 Professional image and burn it.

Everything is converted to a workstation. The only thing I could not change is the hardware acceleration. You will still have to do that manually.

The next week I will redo the convertion to make sure everything is clean. If some people are interested in that I will work out a tutorial!

[EDIT:]

Changes to install routine:
- “Add Users” during Windows’ installation setup (at T12 via cmdlines.txt)
executes: rundll32 netplwiz.dll,UsersRunDll
- AutoLogin
- disabled shutdown tracker
- integrated DirectX 9.0b (slipstreamed)
- Services activated: Themes, IMAPI CD-Burning, Windows Audio, Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
- Theme activated – Luna.Theme (Blue) will be default after Installation
- Theme activated – Luna.Theme (Blue) will at Login/Logout
hacked UXTheme.dll – original file was replaced
- Manage Your Server (MYS) will not show up after startup (default)
- removed “Enhanced Internetsecurity”
- RAM optimized for programs, system cache size reduced
- no password check after resume from screensaver
- no password check after resume from standby
- added “Add Users” to controlpanel (rundll32 netplwiz.dll,UsersRunDll)
- Flash-Player, Shockwave-Player, MS JavaVM - automated silent install (MSI packages)
- visual effects: default active
- added XP Games to optional components
- replaced file: MSGINA.DLL
LogOn/LogOff will now show Windows 2003 Professional
- replaced file: SFC_OS.DLL
Disables Windows File Protection

I've found that Standard makes the best Windows workstation over any previous windows versions. The stability I have recieved with 2003 Server is rediculously great. Having worked for Dell Tech Support I will never use XP on any of my computers and refuse to allow it in my house. MS finally got it right with 2003 Server...finally a reliable windows we can be proud of.

Some FYI: 2003 Enterprise doesn't make as good as a workstation as you can not appear to disable such things as the Event Tracker. Stick with standard and you'll be ok. :)

Well I mean that it won't recognise the motherboard sound card, and I'm too lazy to figure out the brand :)

Big improvement on Video Confencing with MSN Messenger, if that means anything to you. My folks live in the U.K., and now V/C'ing doesn't suck! Whee! :)

I did all of this already. I have had this setup for win2k3 for a while. This is so easy to do. I don't see the problem.
