Hi there,

I current own a Compaq Presario 724EA. However, I am having trouble upgrading my RAM. Whenever, I still extra memory, my system will hang at random. There is no application that causes this. I have tired a numnber of different RAM modules but I still have the same problem. I am not keen on buying Compaq memory as it will cost over £200. Could someone please advice.

well its probably a faulty ram which when it tries to write at some point it fails. run a ram check.
I wouldn't buy a non-branded ram for my laptop man. go buy kingston. rams are important!

Hi there XtremeMaC,

I have tried Kingston ram but I have the same problem. I have ran memX86 RAM test and Microsoft RAM Test. So far both the applications have not detected any faults. Any other suggestion?

Yep, Compaq wanted me to buy Compaq RAM which cost over £200 for 256 MB RAM. Do you think that the File Paging or maybe reformatting my hardisk will help?

Sorry the above message has a couple of errors. Do you think that File Paging is causing the system hang? Will reformatting help?

ps7, how about a bad memory slot????

have you tried putting the one that you have now in that slot to see if it boots?

maybe some bios config? can you even get to the post screen?

ive actually ran into this before, but never came up with a solution. almost every compaq that ive tried adding memory to (adata, mosel, mushkin, crucial sticks) never recognised that i added memory. some would boot fine but not recognize it, some wouldnt post, some would be just plain unstable.

Hi there,

Yep, I have tired using different slots and I have sent my pc for repairs to check faulty hardware. So far everything is working fine. Is there a software that you can use to control the memory.

The other thing is that I am using an athlon processor which heats up the laptop. Could heat be an issue? Is there a way of adding another fan or control the fan speed?

Thanks

basically, if you bought a compaq pc, it would come with a custom motherboard which compaq designed it to only work with products that compaq can supply, sounds stupid but they're thinking about their profit margins more of anything else.

formatting, fdisking, installing new windows and so on would not work as its not compaq RAM is it?

hmm, your issues very weird indeed. the even stranger thing is i have a hp latop, i added kingston mem to it and i've had 0 problems, maybe it's just compaq :)
