I am using MSE antivirus. I thought it was supposed to automatically get updates. If so, why do I seen Definition Updates for MSE when i manually visit the Windows Update site ? Thanks, Mike

It updates before it does a scan. How often is it scheduled to do a scan?

Because it usually updates at a set time or sometimes before a scan. MSE uses Windows Update for its update facility (you will see that if you look at the Windows Update log), so as a registered app in Windows Update, updates for it will show up there.

Yes, since MSE will actually not work if you have updates disabled, you'll have to just check it. When it needs an update it will usually turn orange and show up in the system tray if you normally have it hidden. But if you have your Windows update set to download but you get to choose what updates to install, then Windows will download the MSE update but won't install it until you select it with whatever other updates are ready for you. But you can also just run the update from MSE as well... and it seems that MSE will also sometimes just updates itself from itself and not directly with the Windows Update interface, so maybe I am mistaken.

Thanks everyone for your replies, but I am still a bit confused. I have disabled the automatic scan, because I prefer to do a scan at my choosing, maybe once a week. Does this mean that I am NOT getting any updates automatically ?? I do not see any setting to automatically get any updates, or am I missing something. I also do NOT get the regular Windows Updates, as I prefer to look for them at my convenience. I believe I need to check for the MSE updates manually in the future ?? Thanks, Mike

AFAIK You HAVE to use automatic updates for MSE to work properly and get its updates when they are pushed.

Since MSE is tied to Windows Update, any updates to it will be tied to your Windows Update settings. So what happens to MSE is directly reflected in your "Automatic Updates" settings. So if you don't have the Windows updates set to "download and install for me automatically", then you won't get automatic updates in MSE.

Clearer?

As a "curiosity thing", thought it might be interesting to someone to see the portion of my Window Update log (out of an API prog I've been working on) which involves a MSE database update (as well as the latest program update). The virus/malware database updates show up about once a day, usually.

Thanks EVERYONE, for your replies and suggestion. I believe I will just get the updates manually every day or so. It only takes three clicks and about 10 seconds. Thanks again, Mike
