Hey all.

Anyone have any idea if there is a utility that I can run in WinPE which will autodetect the platform (manufacturer and model type) of server that the WinPE CD-ROM is being used to boot? I'm specifically looking for HP/Compaq server detection.

Thanx all. :)

Hey all.

I found two utilities. The first is survey.exe, the latest version of which is available from the HP/Compaq website here(http://h18007.www1.h...load/19002.html). The problem with it is that it 1) has to be INSTALLED in the OS in order to run (not just copied) ans 2) it needs the Insight Management Agent installed as well in order to run. As a result, it did not work for me, because since I built my WinPE CD using Bart's PEBuilder, there was no way for me to actually 'install' anything to the WinPE CD. The additional difficulty is that the results of the survey utility need to be piped to a text file which then has to be searched in order to find the relevant info on server model and generation. Yuck. Not going there.

The second utility I found actually comes with windows by default. Everyone remember Winmsd.exe? It can tell you what platform you're running. Once again though, it refuses to run with a CD based OS. I did not have the time to examine the possibility of running it in a RAM drive, but I think that it's problem with operating in a WinPE environment (ie running from a CD) is that winmsd talks to the OS to get the OS to tell it what the hardware underneath it is. However, when the server in question is booted with an OS on CD (WinPE), the winmsd utility cannot find an OS to talk to because it goes to the hard disk by default to try to find the OS there. So that does not work either.

I'll post if I find another utility. I was only looking for one to start with because my boss thought that answering four questions (from a batch file generated menu) which allowed you to pick the server model, generation and OS (that you wanted the image of downloaded) took too long...all of about 8 seconds...oooooooooookkkkkkkkkkk.....whatever...
