Is anyone else here having trouble installing March's KB2481109 update?

I get a "Setup cannot continue because one or more prerequisites required to install KB2481109 failed. For More details check the Log File c:\winnt\KB2481109.log"

The log file's content is this...

There is a thread at Technet forums with users reporting the same thing but I haven't had time to read it in detail.

From what I saw, all three updates were related to Remote Desktop. The only one that installed on my PC was KB2483614. By extracting all three with UniExtractor and using Copy->Paste between folders I realized some files had the same names, so I guess only the required one installed (in my case mstsc.exe v. 6.1.7600.20861). And I got the same error during install with the other two, including KB2481109.

Cheers

Extract and read the update_SP3QFE.inf (or update_SP3GDR.inf).

For example, in KB2483614 (i only have that currently) there are those lines:

[PreReq.RDC7.IsPresent]
PresentOp= CheckFilever, System32.files, mstscax.dll

[PreReq.RDC7.IsRightVersion]
GreatOrEqualOp = CheckFilever, System32.files, mstscax.dll , >= , 6.1.7600.16385
LessOp = CheckFilever, System32.files, mstscax.dll , < , 6.1.7601.0

*Edit: it is confirmed in your log file:

2.644: FileVersion of C:\WINNT\system32\mstscax.dll is Less Than 6.0.6001.0

2.644: Fist Condition in Test.RDCInstallBlock.Section Failed

2.644: Condition Check for Line 2 of PreRequisite returned FALSE

I take back everything I said in post #2; after a fresh install of XP, none of them will install. I don't know how it worked the last time. The set of updates I use is always the same.

@belivakov

Sounds like something that could work. However, there are such among us that have deleted the update folders (including the ones in $hf_mig$), which basically means I cannot uninstall anything. Maybe reinstalling -> uninstalling will do the trick...

Cheers

I had the same issue and after some reading I noted that the versions of mstscax.dll and mstsc.exe were different. It looks like the exe was not updated alongside the dll. So the two file versions were different and the upgrade of RDPClient from 6.0 to 6.1 was failing since this was a requisit.

belivakov: nailed one method for a solution. Uninstall 956744 (rolls back RDP to previous version so no mismatch?? I think). Worked for me. If you don't have the update folders then I wonder if you can get that update again and use a command line switch to uninstall rather install. There was obviously a (usually low) risk in deleting the update folders, its a shame this KB update catches it.

I found this page that explained a lot and offered other methods forward:

http://www.mskbarticles.com/index.php?kb=2481109

Essentially it only effects those that installed updates without using windows updates site. So for me it effected all those machines I slipstreamed updates into a custom build dvd..

I'm guessing that is what a lot of readers here are facing.

Hope this help some.
