Unofficial Updates Rollup

UURollup is a cumulative package of almost all currently available unofficial updates. It follows the structure of official M$ updates and can be either installed manually in a running system or slipstreamed using HFSLIP. There are two versions of UURollup available: ENU (English) and Global (non-English). The difference between them is that most of the unofficial updates are provided only in English and cannot be used in other language versions of Windows 2000. Such updates are included in the English version but are not inluded in the Global one. The biggest advantage of the English version is that there are files from two unofficial kernels (WB kernel and BWC kernel) included in it. This is the last and final version of UURollup. There are no more updates planned. UURollup will become obsolete when USP 5.2 is ready.

UURollup is complementary to Update Rollup 2. UURollup (ENU) will become obsolete when USP5.2 is ready.

Windows2000-UURollup-v3a-x86-Global.exe

Details and download links available here.

Update Rollup 2

UR2 is a cumulative rollup of almost all official updates and hotfixes by request (HBRs). There are around 260 packages integrated in it. It covers system updates, MSXML updates and Script 5.7 with updates. IE/OE and WMP updates are not included. The rollup requires Service Pack 4 and Update Rollup 1 to be present and can be either installed manually in a running system or slipstreamed using HFSLIP. At the moment only ENU version of UR2 is available. Other language versions shall be ready shortly.

Update Rollup 2 is complementary to UURollup. Update Rollup 2 (ENU) will become obsolete when USP5.2 is ready.

I sent you a test build 4 of Update Rollup 2 :)

Please install it on a Windows 2000+SP4+UR1 system. It can be a virtual machine. It'd the best if no newer updates were installed. IE version doesn't matter.

If anyone else is interested in testing, please write a message here or send me a PM.

And please don't share the test builds as they are not finished and may not be stable.

OK, I'm a little confused. If I want a TOTALLY up to date Win2K installation with ALL possible updates, official, unoficial, and HBRs, then what do I need to include? Are all of these planned to be included in the proposed SP6, or what?

What would be wild would be to end up with a Onepiece type addon result, in one or more pieces, including latest versions of IE and WMP that will run on Win2K, .NET, DirectX, etc, with all official, unofficial, and HBR type updates, all able to be added using HFSLIP. Any suggestions to end up with this result in the easiest possible manner with the fewest number of pieces?

Cheers and Regards

You're right about the SP6 thing. If I finally decide to make a SP6 it will probably include everything from bristols' Windows 2000 Updates list.

But for now, as I'm still not sure whether I will be able to make it and the Unofficial Update Rollup 2 is still in beta stage, I would suggest to just follow the list.

If you want to include HBRs in your installation then you could use my HBR Mini Rollup. As many new HBRs have just been added to the bristols' site I would suggest waiting a few days until I add them to the Rollup. Then you won't need to download any HBRs (but one - 896414) separately :)

Now, when I finish the Unofficial Update Rollup 2 the process will be much simpler. UR2 will cover all of the official system updates from 2005 to EOL. It means that only UR1+UR2+HBR Rollup + unofficial updates will be needed to include almost everything available on the Windows Updates list. Please take note that apart from the Windows Updates list there are also other lists (IE, Script, etc.) which are NOT covered by these Rollups (yet).

The problem with addons is that they cannot be slipstreamed by using the HF folder. They can only be processed through HFSVCPACK_SW1 folder and by doing so they are not directly integrated into the system but are rather installed in the T-13 phase of the installation. Both HBR Mini Rollup (KB654654) and UR2 (KB742742) are streamable from the HF folder :)

I hope everything is clear now. Unfortunately the only stable release at the moment is the HBR Mini Rollup. Please just give me some time to finish everything ;)

IMPORTANT

Because of a mistake on my side some of the newly added HBRs to the bristols' list may be obsolete. Please wait a few days before downloading them. Some more checking must be done. I'm sorry for this confusion :(

If you absolutely need to make a fully updated installation CD of Win2k now I recommend downloading all official and unofficial updates and the current version (v3) of HBR Mini Rollup. I'd recommend NOT downloading other hotfixes (by request) as for today (except KB896414). Just use the HBR Mini Rollup v3. On the other hand, if you don't need to have it today then it's the best to wait at least few days until everything gets clear.

Even if you are slipstreaming the unofficial updates I still recommend to download ALL official updates, even the superseded ones. I found some glitches and inconsistencies between the new unofficial ones and the superseded official updates. The safest option is to download all of them listed here (without the HBRs) and slipstream using HFSLIP.

HFSLIP will automatically use the newest files so it doesn't matter whether the same file in different versions is included even in several different updates.

I wouldn't worry quite so much about any obsolescence, tomasz86. You said it there in your final sentence - HFSLIP will use the newest files. Obsolete hotfixes in an HFSLIP folder are no more harmful than irrelevant - they simply won't be used.

Any issue with unofficial updates is of course a different matter.

Edit:
Removed the obsolete hotfixes 873339, 884583, 827350, 828741 and the superfluous 821225 and 841872 from the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page (thanks tomasz86).

That's true but downloading HBRs is a pain so it's better to download only the ones that we know for sure contain newer files ;)

HFSLIP installs the newest files but it doesn't check the file version - as a batch script it determines which files are newer basing on the date when they were created.

Anyway, now everything should be OK ;) I'm going to include the newly added HBRs to the HBR Mini Rollup.

Sure, but it's by no means an emergency. :D

Are you sure? There's no version checking in HFSLIP?

Absolutely sure. TommyP mentioned it somewhere but I cannot find it now :( HFSLIP uses "XCOPY/DY".

Today's news:

There are more than 70 HBRs (hotfixes by request) newly added to the bristols' page so it'll probably take some time to make a new version of the HBR Mini Rollup. V3 is 100% stable so if you want to slipstream all HBRs, you can just use HBR MR v3 and download the rest of not included HBRs separately.

As for the UR2 beta1, it also seems to be stable. I found just one cosmetic issue but it doesn't have any influence on the process of slipstreaming so it doesn't really matter. I want to add the few remaining updates to make it complete. The hardest one is Windows Installer. I need more time in order to finish it.

I'm also going to make a UU Mini Rollup which will include all unofficial updates. Why doing a separate Rollup and not include them in UR2? I think it's better to have two separate Rollups - one containing only official M$ updates and the other one for UUs. Some people may hesitate installing the unofficial updates and if I include them in UR2 then they won't use it. If there are two Rollups, everyone can make a choice to install the UUs or not :)

I think I found a SUPER EASY way to make Rollups. Fully automated.

What's the catch?

It cannot be manually installed. So what for? Slipstreaming works

The problem with making Rollups manually is that in order to make it work update.inf files from all of the updates have to be merged into one. If done manually, it takes a LOT of time to do it. But HFSLIP doesn't need the merged update.inf :)

I need to do more tests but if everything works as expected Update Rollup 2 and the new HBR Mini Rollup will be ready much sooner than planned :)

@edit

I was too optimistic :( Merging update.inf files is required for HFSLIP as it doesn't take more than one *.inf file from each update... and my script can only make update rollups with multiple update.infs :/

Update Rollup 2 BETA2 (KB742742-BETA2) ready

Changelog:
    - Windows Installer 3.1 included (KB893803-v2, KB927891)
    - Web Folders update (KB892211) included

Known issues:
    - Windows Installer 3.1 not yet included (KB893803-v2, KB927891)
    - KB951748-V2 not yet included
    - KB958470 not yet included
    - KB974571 not yet included
    - KB979683 not (yet?) included
    - Server updates not included
    - catalog files (*.cat) are not installed

I rebuilt the entire thing using a batch script which allows me to automatically merge hotfixes except for the update.inf files which I had to merge manually. Nevertheless, the process is much simpler now and I'm able to work much quicker than before :) Also the probability of making mistakes has been much lowered thanks to the script.

Update Rollup 2 is almost finished but I'm struggling to separate Server-only and Professional-only (there is just one - KB951748 and it's a pain in the neck...) updates. Actually, it's very easy to edit the update.inf to install specific files according to Windows edition BUT HFSLIP slipstreams all files anyway. That's why two versions of UR2 have to be created if you don't want server-only files being slipstreamed :}

    - catalog files (*.cat) are not installed

    * - these updates are marked as Server only updates by bristols but
899591 - installs rdpwd.sys which is deleted by HFSLIP if Windows 2000 Professional is detected. Rdpwd.sys is also present in UR1.
926121 - does not install any files but adds only one registry entry. It will be added only if you use Windows 2000 Server (all editions)
970483 - installs httpext.dll which is present also in Windows 2000 Professional

** - in case of 958470 these registry entries are added and the update itself is not installed

*** - official 973904 cannot be slipstreamed but 973904-v2 can and this the one included in this Rollup

**** - 951748 is marked as "not for server" by bristols but Microsoft says it can be installed in any edition of Windows 2000. It also gets automatically installed if you run Windows Update in Windows 2000 Server.

I still need to do some cosmetic work but the Rollup itself is already completed. Final version should be ready in a very short time :)

WINDOWS-KB909520-V1.000-X86-ENU.EXE <- OK, Smartcard update, not really necessary

To sum up, you're using a Server edition of Windows 2000 and you decided to slipstream HBRs together with public updates (official and unofficial).

As for the public updates, everything seems to be OK. In case of HBRs, you're using my HBR Mini Rollup v3 which is quite outdated :( as many new updates have been added to the bristols' site recently. If you really want to include all HBRs in your Windows CD, I would suggest downloading them one by one as HBR Mini Rollup includes many updates which have been just replaced by the newly added updates.

If you still decide to use HBR Mini Rollup, then compare this list
Spoiler

with the HBRs available at bristols' and download the missing ones. BTW, HBRs may cause system instabilities so please be careful when slipstreaming them. They weren't thoroughly tested as public updates are. UR2 does not include any HBRs.

And the last but very important thing, if you are using FDV fileset and slipstream IE6, you MUST use the newest beta of HFSLIP to have all files slipstreamed correctly.
