This error message occurs in Notepad after converting from Windows Vista to Windows 7 running under Bootcamp:
"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Solution: Notepad bug. Download and use Crimson Editor.

An ethical issue: I spent 5 hours with two Microsoft Support engineers. The solution from Microsoft is to call VMWare because the file resided on a "shared" drive. The Internet is full of Notepad bugs. Microsoft should own this problem and FIX Notepad. In the interim, at least admit it is their problem and document it for the support staff to save many, many potential users (as well as staff) valuable time.

I've been using Windows since 3.1 and I've never encountered, nor heard of a notebad bug before this (including a number of years of doing IT work for relatives/friends or for a living). It's hardly the support nightmare you make it out to be... In fact, given your environment, I'd be tempted to blame something else first.
