/o means online. The files are deleted if the PC is idle.

OK, a stupid newbie here. :blushing:

Removed too many of things on 7 SP1 online with install_wim_tweak.exe /o /c "packagename" /r

Now there is BSOD on boot 0x12a - it cannot find licensed language packs.

Of course, I suspect the following packages:

Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package-wrapper~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~en-US~6.1.7601.17514
Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~en-US~6.1.7601.17514
Microsoft-Windows-Client-Refresh-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~en-US~6.1.7601.17514

I don't know if I removed all of them. I was so frustrated it didn't work (see observation below) that I tried multiple times with multiple things.

What can I do to arrive to a desktop? System Restore is and was turned off.

And an observation: This program didn't work until the services Volume Shadow Copy and MS Shadow Copy provider were started. For some reason, they couldn't start themselves. I waited for 16 hours. :angel

I tried it Online inside a VM

install_wim_tweak.exe /o /c Microsoft-Hyper-V /r

the package was removed, but the VM addition drivers are still in the WinSxS folder. I also tried it with the message queuing client and the files are also in the WinSxs folder.

Interesting post about Winsxs folders:

Should you delete files in the \WinSXS directory? And what’s the deal with VSS?

I know it the blog. I wrote their comments too. I was confused that it took 1 day to delete the files.

Second try.

Win7 Home Premium x86 SP1.

I came down to this...

Spoiler

It probably can be better, but for now it's pretty good for my needs. :angel

Haven't tested it much, this install also goes to scrap because of unrelated issue.

Multiple runs were needed, often with different chronological order of retries. And some restaring of VSS service and the computer.

IE9 added some packages. Didn't touch them.

Initial pre-install slimming was done with Windows 7 Toolkit 130-19A, but it also failed to remove some (many?) packages. I didn't count how many.

Just want to point out you should only unhide components you want to remove, unhiding ALL might break add/remove windows features

I did only this, Sir:

install_wim_tweak.exe /o /l

install_wim_tweak.exe /o /c PACKAGENAME /r

because I'm a stoopid noob when it comes to Win7 and I don't know anything more. :angel

But thank you, Sir. :hello:

ok, it works with Vista, too. I don't know what went wrong yesterday

Btw, I have an idea. It would be cool if we can have a text file with all package names which we want to remove. Now we should only specify a parameter and your tool reads the text file and removes all the listed packages.

Thanks, Lego, hadn't seen this yet. Only found it on accident because someone posted a link over here.

Does running the DISM remove-feature with the online switch rip everything out of the SXS folder reducing your C: drive ? Or does it just remove the feature from the OS and we can run dism enable-feature without requiring the DVD (i.e. files are still in SXS)

install_wim_tweak.exe /o
This will unhide all the packages on the currently installed OS

Found how to clean up WinSxs after removing components:

run "dism /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup"

don't forget /online or /image: keys

I've also found this last year when playing with the Remove flag. The command is now shown in the CBs.log. There is also an async version of it.

Can I use this tool to uninstall and re-install Windows Defender?

Win8 64-bit Pro. Windows Defender Service is running but when I try to run Windows Defender app to bring up the control panel for it I get:

"An error ocurred in the program during initialization.....

error code 0x80073b01

I must have changed a registry setting or something to break it but in true MS fashion, the error message has no meaningful info aside from the error code which when Googled appears to be a rare error.
