Ideas for a possible UNOfficial Windows XP SP4

A big advantage to the approach that Yzöwl and allen2 suggest, essentially an "Enhancement Pack for XP" script, or builder, is that the user is then free to include or bypass the pieces that he wishes, making it much more flexible. Another thing to consider is that the more you add, the quicker it will go out of date since all of the items added are not on the same update schedule. Having it as a script or builder makes it easier for the user to keep it up to date if they wish. Although I understand that some people prefer not having to do the work themselves, but would rather an AIO pack be handed to them all tested and ready to go.

Cheers and Regards

And i am pretty sure that most of us here never even tried to manually download more than 50 Microsoft patchs as there are now a lot of ways to get them downloaded by scripts or apps.

Yzöwl,

why is Gurgelmeyer's USP5 (& unofficial updates for 2K) allowed then? ;) All of them use modified files.

They are not allowed by Microsoft or allowed to be distributed through the MSFN Forums.

Thank you for highlighting this rule breach tomasz86; If those items are available to download from MSFN, they will be removed and the Members providing them Banned according to the rules they agreed to when joining.

If you'd like to provide me with the links to the disallowed posts and the users names, I'll get right on it thank you.

I apologize. Since packs from Gurgelmeyer, Onepiece, user_hidden, and similar pack and addon makers are allowed at other forums such as wincert and RyanVM, I had thought they were allowed here as well. But I understand that different forums have slightly different rules for their own reasons, and it is up to the members to respect those rules. Thank you Yzöwl for clarifying things.

Cheers and Regards

If that's the case then probably many (if not most of) users' project related to updating/modifying M$ systems shouldn't be allowed here. I won't name anyone by name as I don't want to get them banned because of my words.

My question was about why an unofficial SP for XP shouldn't be allowed when unofficial SPs for other M$ systems (98, 2000, etc.) are openly available to download :angel

There's already up to date update packs or using individual updates via my UDC script. Both will give you a "clean" WU so what's the point?

Just so that we are all clear here, please do not misunderstand MSFN's stance on this, it is against our rules to use our Forum structure for distribution of these things, that goes for Personal Messages as well as the Public Boards.

Nobody has requested that your project must be stopped, simply reminded all persons interested in this type of thing about the Rules they agreed to by joining the Community.

A reminder of the pertinent rules:

» No Illegal/Copyrighted Software Discussion

1.a This is not a warez site! Links/Requests to warez and/or illegal material (e.g., cracks, serials, etc.) will not be tolerated. Discussion of circumventing WGA/activation/timebombs/license restrictions, use of keygens, or any other illegal activity, including, but not limited to, requests for help where pirated software is being used or being discussed, will also not be tolerated. Offenders may be banned on first violation.

1.b Respect the requests of companies who do not permit redistribution of their products without express permission - including unmodified hotfix/feature pack packages. Download sources for official software should be from the vendor directly where possible. Posts made containing this type of content may be removed immediately without warning, and offenders may be banned on first violation.

1.c Users should be made aware of what they are getting prior to any download/install package from a Member provided link. As such, every post which contains links to repackaged software MUST state specifically the nature of the software. This includes, but is not limited to, trialware, shareware, payware, freeware etc. If a trial version, the length of the trial should be stated as should whether an uninstall is part of the package. If registration keys/information is required to be input for continued usage of software in the package, then the post must state that fact as well. Any message with link(s) found to not state this required information will be removed and will result in measures being taken against the poster, up to and including a ban. Also, if the stated information is found to be deceptive or the software redistribution is found to be illegal (rule 1.b ), the poster will be banned.

1.d If a product's license agreement or license type specifically prohibits the usage of said product in a particular manner (for example, a Creative Commons license that prohibits commercial usage), please do not post questions or comments about the usage of said products in a manner that violates the license agreement. If there is any doubt about a license agreement's coverage and restrictions please question the owners or authors of the product directly if your usage violates their licensing agreement; please do not use MSFN for such requests (unless MSFN is the support forum for said product). Any offenders of this rule may be banned on first violation. We take issues like this very seriously here at MSFN.

If you feel that you can continue with your project whilst abiding by the rules then please do so.

If you require confirmation of specific post content prior to posting, within reason, please contact the Mods/Admins in advance for advice.

As far as I can understand, the development of a builder script, which would then allow the user to make his own enhancement pack, for his own use, using hotfixes etc downloaded directly from MS or whoever the original author is, should be able to be fully developed, distributed, and supported here at MSFN, much like HFSLIP was.

 I think you are correct in your approach. I'll stop this project here... or I'll end up being banned. You may delete this topic

Thanx a lot ... Yzöwl

Creating an Unofficial XP SP4 is a fine project and you can definately do it for personal use. If you want others to be able to have it as well, you can provide the necessary steps on how another user can create it for themselves. Any links you provide for where a user can download an update or hotfix must be from an official Microsoft website. For any hotfixes that require someone to use the MS hotfix request page, you can post those links also. Do not rehost anything, including whatever tools you end up using. Always try to link to their original authors, unless that specific product is redistributable under a specific license, like GPL or so where you need to include the license file.

As Tripredacus has pointed out the way of doing your project in this manner will work here at MSFN and would still benefit everyone concerned. I really like the idea of a SP4 and I'm sure it could be done and be a GREAT project. Here's an idea though. Don't LUMP everything into one package, have two packages maybe. 1 with just the normal updates and then a second one with everything. I may be only person that doesn't need all the bells and whistles so it might be a good idea to do it like I mentioned above or like the way Onepiece does his by editing certain lines if you don't want Silverlight or what ever else.

Just my .02
