Hi there, over the past few days I’ve found out about Windows PE. I found out that there are quite a few shells but I can’t seem to get the original explorer shell running.

I am using MS Windows PE, and when I open explorer.exe, from the dos console nothing happens or, if I use the XPE plug-in I get a message saying "Explorer died during load".

If somebody can help me or tell me how I can get explorer to run I will be very grateful!

Thanks very much for your time and help :),
Christopher Hemple

You can't just open explorer.exe, it's depending on a lot of other files...
The easiest way to get explorer working, is to use the XPE-plugin.
When you use the XPE-plugin, you must also have the ramdrive plugin working.

How do i load a plugin into Windows PE?

Thanks
Chris.

EDIT:
In-fact... Would it be possible to take the dependences from XP's explorer using a dependency scanner and put them into PE? Does explorer in xp only rely on dll's or does it need the registry also? - It would be sweet if i can get explorer running! :)

take a look at this:
http://pages.infinit...ol/peplugin.htm

In the file explorer.inf under section [SourceDisksFiles] are a listing of files and in sections [*.AddReg] there are listings of registry keys, and in classes.reg are a listing of other registry keys needed to get explorer working. You can use the tutorial on the page likuid gave you to see how to edit WinPE registry.

The plugins are for Barts PE builder, but can be manually put in M$ WinPE... Takes a lot of trial and error, though :)

I use Bart's PEBuilder to make all my PE CDs - quite easy once you get the hang of it. Lots of plugins available, and lately been making my own. You can see screenshots (low-quality) of my "miniPE" desktop HERE.

All of the apps fit on a miniCD (8cm).

PS If anyone has a WORKING plugin for Partition Magic I would be grateful! (for the nu2 BartPE shell)
