Hello MSFN, I found this forum through links at nLite. I'm a mechanic by trade but I am the "Director of Information Technology and Networking" for our 6 computer homeschool setup at home. I know just enough to keep my head above water most days, but some days...... not so much. We're all still running XP pro except my oldest son's laptop is a very early Vista machine. We have a networked printer with a server attatched and some other neat gizmos. I'm really hoping to setup a NAS sometime this year to simplify my backup duties but will need some $ first. Anyway, it's nice to be here and I hope I can help once in a while too.

Welcome! I recommend Netgear ReadyNAS but heard that Synology and QNap introduced some new products at CES.

tain, I agree with you about the netgear stuff. It looks pretty good and reasonable to set up and run. I just missed a great deal on craigslist for one last week. Some of the new stuff really looks great but we're not much into "brand new" stuff. (3kids homeschooled = 1 income family) All our stuff is like the Millenium Falcon most days it works great and is really fast but sometimes pieces fly off for no apparent reason!
It's all secondhand rebuilt or fresh homebuilt except the vista machine. My son got that as a present from his grandparents the day vista was released. (That's our "brand new" one)
Anyway that's why I get to be "IT Director" for the "school".
but it's never dull!!!

Hi everyone, seems like this is a very interesting forum. I’m a newbie here and hopefully I’ll be able to participate in some threads/discussions since I like to discuss things that I am familiar with. I want to share my learnings and hopefully learn from all of you. I’m almost excited here.
